That's according to Toshiba President, Shozo Saito, who's promised that within three years 25% of new laptops will use solid state drives. Of course, that'll require a big leap in capacity and a significant dip in price. Well, check and check. Old Saito's not only revealed that Toshiba will soon be launching a 512GB SSD, but he also believes that prices will fall by 40-50% every twelve months. By our calculations that could see a £2000 128GB SSD coming in at under £250 by 2011. Should give us just enough time to save up.
They do things a little differently in the US... Dell's latest ad for its Latitude XT tablet PC starts by sawing a Toshiba Portege 3500 tablet in half, which seems a little harsh...
Solid-state iPods with capacities matching those of their hard disk-based brethren
could soon be on the cards, thanks to the boffins at Toshiba. Its research into
solid-state storage technology designs looks likely to lead to flash memory
chips with a capacities of 100Gbit -- in theory.
It's all thanks to Toshiba's 'Sonos' (Silicon Oxide Nitride Oxide Semiconductor)
design that should make for faster reading and writing of data, more permanent
storage - and increased capacities. The catch is that the current flash memory
manufacturing process is stuck at 65nm and Toshiba has to figure out how to
shrink this to 50nm, then 45nm, then 32nm before hitting the magic 10nm mark.
So, we probably won't be seeing 80Gb iPhones just yet.
Toshiba has announced yet another new Windows Mobile-powered handset, the Portégé G810, further expanding smartphone portfolio. Available in the UK sometime in the spring, the G810 is Toshiba’s first handheld to support HSUPA and has a 2.83in 320 x 240 screen with A-GPS and a 3-megapixel camera. The G810 is impressively slim at just 14mm, but it’s a touch-screen-only device.
The G810 is powered by a Qualcomm MSM7200 processor running at 400MHz, and has 256 ROM and 128Mb RAM (with a microSD card slot for adding up to 4Gb of additional storage). There’s also has a built-in FM tuner with RDS.
If you use a laptop for long periods in one place (your desk,
for instance), it's a good idea to plug in an external mouse and keyboard -
and a monitor, if you have one - so that you're not sitting with a hunched posture
all day. Connecting and disconnecting this lot each day is a bit of a bind though,
which is where a docking station comes in.
Most laptop manufacturers offer optional docking stations but they only tend
to work with one particular range of laptops. If you don't mind making a few
small sacrifices (of which more later), a third-party dock is a cheaper solution.
We had high hopes for the Belkin High-Speed Docking Station we reviewed last
year, but it had a few too many limitations for our liking and the ExpressCard
connection meant that it wouldn't work with all laptops. The Toshiba DynaDock,
on the other hand, connects via USB - which means it'll work with anything.
Toshiba has launched the world's highest capacity laptop drive - the 320Gb MK3252GSX.
The drive has two 160Gb platters that spin at 5,400rpm. This is still some way behind the fastest 7,200rpm laptop drives, but faster - and 20Gb bigger - than the last holder of the biggest-laptop-drive crown, the 300Gb, 4,200rpm Fujitsu MHX2300BT (catchy names abound in the storage world…).
The Toshiba MK3252GSX also has an 8Mb buffer and a SATA interface, and will be available bulk in November - just in time for the Christmas market.
Toshiba has launched a new scheme through which customers can offset the carbon dioxide produced during the manufacture and lifetime use of their laptops. For a donation of just £1.18, customers now have the option of making their laptops a ‘carbon zero’ purchase through a tree planting scheme at a dedicated Toshiba woodland, delivered in partnership with co2balance, Toshiba’s carbon offset partner.
The trees planted as part of the Toshiba Carbon Zero scheme will be native broad-leafed trees, in a new developing woodland called Sand Martin Wood in Cumbria. Toshiba says that trees are an effective, natural means of absorbing carbon dioxide emissions as part of the carbon cycle, with each tree absorbing around one tonne of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide during its lifetime.
Yes, they are still being made and Toshiba is the latest laptop manufacturer to launch a new range of tablet PCs. The two models in the new Portégé M700 series are Toshiba’s fourth take on the tablet concept and both are based on Intel Centrino vPro technology, with Core 2 Duo T7250 processors (based on the Merom platform, rather than the new 45nm Penryn).
Toshiba has launched the world’s biggest SDHC card at IFA in Berlin. The 32Gb SD-HC032GT4 Class 4 (guaranteeing sustained data writes at 4MB/s ) card will start mass production in January 2008 and will be joined by the 16Gb SD-HC016GT4 SDHC card and the 8Gb SD-MH008GA microSDHC card.
Anyone looking to boost their digital camera of MP3 player capacity should note that SDHC cards can only be used with devices that support the SD Memory card Ver. 2.00 standard and they’re not backwardly compatible with standard SD Memory cards. Prices for both cards have yet to be announced.
Toshiba isn’t an especially big player in the UK phone market but, if the Portégé G900 is anything to go by, it’s looking to make a splash. It’s a smartphone with a sliding keyboard design much like the HTC TyTN II , but it’s a bit bigger and heavier – and for good reason, too.
A smartphone with a well-designed hardware keyboard is, for many business users, the only way to use Windows Mobile. They're becoming increasingly...
