10 billion ARM processors now in use worldwide

ARM processorThere are some 10 billion ARM mobile processors in use around the world, according to figures released by the Cambridge-based chip maker -- that’s over one and a half processors for every person in the world. And before mobile phone owners start wondering where their half a chip is, it’s worth bearing in mind that ARM’s processors are used in everything from iPods to HD TVs to Wi-Fi routers.

10 million 3G iPhone order rumoured and Apple secures Japanese iPhone trademark

Apple iPhone 3GMarket research firm Gardner reckons Apple has just placed an order for 10 million 3G iPhones, fuelling speculation that an updated model will be launched later this year. In a telephone interview, Gartner ‘Distinguished Analyst’ Ken Delaney said that his sources have confirmed Apple’s bulk order, and went on to suggest that the new iPhone’s will also use OLED screens to help keep the size down and battery life up with the addition of the power-hungry 3G.

A sneak peak at Windows Mobile 6.1

Portuguese website PocketPT has posted some screens from Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 ahead of the official unveiling at Mobile World Congress 2008. Most notable of the new features are the introduction of a long-awaited threaded SMS application and an improved Pocket Internet Explorer that can now give a zoomed-out overview of web pages.

Anti-virus firms offer protection for mobile devices

With an estimated 350 mobile viruses and threats out there, it’s no surprise that anti-virus companies are now targeting this market. The latest include Symantec (the company behind the Norton brand) and McAfee, which have both announced new mobile anti-virus products. Symantec’s Norton Smartphone Security, is claimed to be the first consumer mobile security offering to cater for both the Windows Mobile and Symbian operating systems.

Apple decrees only two iPhones per customer in the UK

Apple iPhoneWith just a few days to go before the iPhone goes on sale in the UK, Apple has revealed what the 'event' will entail. The iPhone will be available from Apple, O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores from 6.02pm on Friday 9th November. The 8Gb model will cost £269 inc VAT and there will be a limit of two iPhones per customer.

Apple iPhoneGiven the blanket coverage bestowed upon it since the 9th November launch, you’re probably sick to the back teeth of the iPhone by now. But whatever you think about Apple’s latest gadget, you have to admit that it must be something special to have garnered quite so much media attention.

After using a UK model on the O2 network for a week, the fact of the matter is that…. yes, the iPhone is something special. That’s not to say it isn’t without it’s faults, but it’s perhaps the best smartphone we’ve ever reviewed, but not for the reasons you might think.

BT launching 'Blackberry-style' device

HYC S620Its last attempt at a mobile phone - BT Fusion - may have been a flop, but BT is apparently about to move back into mobile services with a Blackberry-esque handset that will be happy both out and about and back at home with a BT Wi-Fi Home Hub.

The Times reports that BT will use one of HTC's devices and Vodafone's 3G network. Handset candidates could well be the RIM/Palm lookalike HTC S620 (pictured), or the newly launched HTC Touch Diamond.

The BT launch event is tomorrow, so we should have more news then.

Can I convert my German iPaq to English?

I recently bought an iPaq 3660 from eBay and was very pleased with the price I ended up paying. Unfortunately, I found that I had not read the auction correctly and discovered that a German version of Pocket PC 2000 was installed. Being British, this is not much use to me and I wanted to know how to change the language.
