Market research firm Gardner reckons Apple has just placed an order for 10 million 3G iPhones, fuelling speculation that an updated model will be launched later this year. In a telephone interview, Gartner ‘Distinguished Analyst’ Ken Delaney said that his sources have confirmed Apple’s bulk order, and went on to suggest that the new iPhone’s will also use OLED screens to help keep the size down and battery life up with the addition of the power-hungry 3G.
As ever, take this with a lethal dose of salt, but a French website claims to have been anonymously sent two photos of the 3G iPhone.
Debate has been raging online about whether they are fake or not but, if true, the emergence of the snaps could suggest an European launch coming sooner than in the 3G-backward States. Earlier rumours have even placed the launch in Australia so suggestions of a non-US launch might not be inconceivable for Apple.
The device itself is an all black affair with a squarer finish to the original. Some have pointed out the lack of an obvious front-facing camera but then whispers have already pointed to the video-calling cam being hidden from sight behind the front glass.
Don't expect these to be the last 'spy shots' we see - Apple does like to keep people guessing.
Yet more evidence that the 3G iPhone will launch first in Europe. derStandard - the Austrian newspaper that first tipped that the original iPhone would be arriving in Austria on T-Mobile - is reporting that the 3G version of the phone will be tested there - also on T-Mobile.
The beta release of the iPhone's 2.0 firmware is turning up some interesting surprises. The chaps at ZiPhone have pointed out a line of code that refers to the "SGOLD3". It doesn't take much imagination to work out that could refer to the successor to the iPhone's current Infineon S-GOLD2 chip, responsible for, among other things the phone's GPRS and EDGE data. It just so happens that Infineon has already released the S-GOLD3H, which, would you believe it, is a 7.2Mbps HSDPA chip? We'll add that little fact to the mounting pile of evidence that a 3G iPhone is on the way soon.
We'd been hearing that sales were brisk of the cut price 8GB iPhone following last week's £100 price slash but now it seems the handset could actually be selling out sooner than some had expected. Carphone Warehouse's website lists the phone as 'out of stock' but more telling is an email sent to members of the affiliate network, Tradedoubler.
Apple and Asus are the latest computer companies to become embroiled in patent rows. Apple is being sued for $360 million (£180 million) by Klausner Technologies, which alleges that the iPhone's Visual Voicemail system infringes two of the company's patents filed in the early 1990s. The patents cover a "Telephone Answering Device" which can be used to organise voicemails. Klausner also has its sights on AT&T and Skype, and has successfully defended its patents against AOL and Vontage, which both license the technology.
Meanwhile, IBM has asked the US government to block imports of some Asus's products, alleging that the Taiwanese company has infringed three of its patents concerning PC components including, power supply units and cooling systems. Asus, which works closely with companies such as Apple and Dell, has begun marketing its own brand of PCs, including the well-received Eee PC. Asus denies the allegations.
With just a few days to go before the iPhone goes on sale in the UK, Apple
has revealed what the 'event' will entail. The iPhone will be available from Apple,
O2 and Carphone
Warehouse stores from 6.02pm on Friday 9th November. The 8Gb model will cost
£269 inc VAT and there will be a limit of two iPhones per customer.
Given the blanket
coverage bestowed upon it since the 9th
November launch, you’re probably sick to the back teeth of the iPhone by
now. But whatever you think about Apple’s latest gadget, you have to admit that
it must be something special to have garnered quite so much media attention.
After using a UK model on the O2 network for a week, the fact of the matter
is that…. yes, the iPhone is something special. That’s not to say it isn’t without
it’s faults, but it’s perhaps the best smartphone we’ve ever reviewed, but not
for the reasons you might think.
Apple has just refreshed its iPhone and iPod range with the launch of a 16Gb iPhone and 32Gb iPod Touch. Both new models cost £329 and are available immediately. The old 8Gb iPhone and 8Gb/16Gb iPod Touch models are still available, with no price change. It's unclear why Apple is charging twice as much for the iPhone upgrade
as on the iPod Touch - its extra 8Gb of storage costs £60, which is the same as the iPod's extra
16Gb.
The latest iPhone firmware build, 2.0, has just been sent to developers with one or two interesting additions in the pipeworks - including wireless syncing with .Mac accounts. Most intriguing of all is a new YouTube plug-in for iPhone's Safari web browser, sparking rumours that Flash support, or at least in-browser YouTube footage, is on the way.
