Apple and Asus face patent battles
By George Cole on Friday, 07 December 2007

ImageApple and Asus are the latest computer companies to become embroiled in patent rows. Apple is being sued for $360 million (£180 million) by Klausner Technologies, which alleges that the iPhone's Visual Voicemail system infringes two of the company's patents filed in the early 1990s. The patents cover a "Telephone Answering Device" which can be used to organise voicemails. Klausner also has its sights on AT&T and Skype, and has successfully defended its patents against AOL and Vontage, which both license the technology.

Meanwhile, IBM has asked the US government to block imports of some Asus's products, alleging that the Taiwanese company has infringed three of its patents concerning PC components including, power supply units and cooling systems. Asus, which works closely with companies such as Apple and Dell, has begun marketing its own brand of PCs, including the well-received Eee PC. Asus denies the allegations.

Dell admits UK keyboard cock up
By Nick Mansell on Friday, 02 May 2008

Vostro keyboardTwo fingered stab-style typists may not even know where the Z-key usualy lies on a QWERTY keyboard but, for those who touch type, a familiar layout is pretty much essential. Which is why Jake Gordon felt more than a little miffed when his new Dell Vostro 1310 arrived with the Z key, and every other letter on the bottom row, shifted to the right.

Dell to launch own low-cost laptop?
By Nick Mansell on Wednesday, 09 April 2008

The Dow Jones newswire is reporting that an official at the Taiwanese laptop maker, Compal Electronics, has said it's building a new low-cost mini notebook for PC giant, Dell. According to the source, the Asus Eee competitor could launch as early as June - nicely timed for the launch of Intel's new Atom processor.

It's apparently aiming to ship out up to two million of the small-size laptops in 2008 alone. Details elsewhere on the web suggest it'll be an 8.9in model, selling for under $500, putting it in direct competition with the Eee PC 900 and HP Mini-Note.

There's no official word from the company, but Dell fans are already getting excited.

By Sasha Muller on Monday, 01 October 2007

Dell XPS M1330The launch of Dell’s new XPS branded laptop was a flamboyant and sun-drenched affair. Journalists congregated from around the world in Marbella and with the echo of the M1330’s marketing mantra, “the thinnest 13.3” laptop in the world”, ringing in our ears, we waited in eager anticipation, jaws poised and ready to drop.

Dell's art-inspired Inspirons
By Nick Mansell on Thursday, 08 May 2008

Dell Inspiron 1525 Special EditionThese are Dell's Special Edition Inspiron 1525 laptops. The designer notebooks carry the artwork of Brooklyn-based artist, Mike Ming. He says he: “wanted to create a sense of energy, playfulness, sophistication and psychedelic momentum," with his scribblings. Our thoughts exactly.

The special editions are the first in a series of designer Dells, which vice president of Consumer Experience Design, Ed Boyd, says is a trend he's, "excited to see continue."

The Ming Inspirons can be had from a surprisingly modest $699 - a $100 premium on a standard 1525. Dell hasn't said whether they'll be arriving here or whether any UK artists will get a look-in. A Damien Hirst Vostro perhaps?
