We’ve had to wait a while for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 – despite being announced way back in February, this Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone only recently went on sale. And then promptly sold out.

We’ve finally managed to get our hands on one though, so if you were holding off your next smartphone purchase until you could learn more about eh Xperia X1, this is what you’ve been waiting for. Or not, as you’ll see from our hands-on video…

HTC has been plugging away with its own-brand Windows Mobile smartphones for a couple of years now, and its steady stream of new handsets has been pretty impressive, by and large. And “large” is certainly an adjective that can be applied to its latest model – the HTC Touch HD.

Although no bigger than an iPhone (in fact it’s virtually the same size), the HTC Touch HD packs in a screen that is not only huge, but also very high resolution – 3.8in from corner to corner, with a whopping 480 x 800 resolution. This is by far the largest, high-resolution screen on a Windows Mobile smartphone – or any pocket-size portable device, for that matter (see it in action in our hands-on video).

HTC looks set to break the record for Most Smartphones Launched by a Single Manufacturer with the arrival of the Touch HD. Long anticipated for its large, high resolution screen, it doesn’t disappoint – well, at least for a Windows Mobile 6.1 device. One arrived in the Mobile Computer office a couple of days ago and as is the tradition, we’ve shot a hands-on video to give our first impressions to tide you over until we publish the full review in a day or so – watch it after the cut.

A mere six years on from the original Xda, the O2 smartphone brand has finally made it onto pre-pay. Remarkably, the Zest is the first Xda on O2's Pay & Go - designed to "encourage first time PDA users to swap from conventional handsets".

Temping them over from their Series 40 Nokias will be a 2.8in touchscreen, complete with "finger-friendly touch interface", a 3mp camera, Wi-Fi, HSDPA and Windows Mobile 6.1.

We missed the launch of the Samsung SGH-i900 Omnia a few weeks ago and while this Windows Mobile smartphone has now been on sale for a while, we still thought it was worth reviewing. After all, if Samsung thinks it’s an important enough product to warrant a huge marketing campaign extolling its virtues, who are we to argue?

Smartphones have long evolved past the point where they’re just a way to make calls and manage your contacts, and Samsung makes much of the Omnia’s multimedia abilities in its ads (and made the best unboxing video we’ve ever seen). Of course a smartphone with any kind of audio/video pretensions now has the iPhone to contend with, but Samsung has taken some suitable compensatory steps.

HP has announced two new Windows Mobile smartphones today – the iPaq Voice Messenger and Data Messenger. HP is pitching the smartphones at two different markets and the iPaq Voice Messenger is aimed at users who need a phone first; the iPaq Data Traveller is pitched at people looking for a more traditional smartphone.

Although the design of each smartphone is different, specifications are largely the same – more photos, full specifications and our hands-on video after the cut.

We’ve had to wait a little while for a Samsung Omnia i900 review unit and as a result, our thoughts on this new Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 smartphone aren’t as fresh as we’d like.

Given Samsung's marketing blitz for this smartphone, we think it's still worth reviewing though (it's not like you care what any other websites say, right..?), and as usual, we’ve started with a hands-on video to give an overview of the Omnia's main features – after the cut.

That is an Apple iPhone and that is Windows Mobile running on its screen. At least, if it isn't, it's a very convincing hoax. The guy holding the phone is Norwegian, Erik Kristiansen, who says "lots of long winters" helped him programme the BootCamp style app that works with the iPhone's touchscreen and allows you to boot into either MacOS or Windows Mobile.

The maker of the Touch Pro and T-Mobile G1, HTC, has announced it will ship an estimated 13 to 15 million smartphones this year - not bad for a maker that was outside the top five when the year began.

Having made it into the top three of the handset making elite - admittedly someway behind the leaders Nokia and RIM - HTC is toasting a very successful year. Its decision to ditch its re-badge image and market its own phones has seen it's 'brand value' soar to join Acer, Asus and TrendMicro as Taiwanese brands worth over a billion dollars.

The bulk of HTC's will, unsurprisingly be Windows Mobile models, but those in the know are also predicting that the HTC-made T-Mobile G1, which packs Google Android, will be selling at a rate of 200,000 a month by the end of the year, following its October and November on-sale dates in the US and Europe. That should give the bottom line a healthy boost.

HTC has confirmed the existence of the Touch HD, just days after images of the impressive-looking new smartphone were leaked online. As predicted, the Touch HD has a 3.8in, 480 x 800 (WVGA) screen and HSDPA, in a package that’s around the same size as the iPhone.

HTC has also announced two other QVGA Windows Mobile Touch smartphones – the Touch 3G and Touch Viva (previously known as the 'Opal ') – and both are essentially incremental upgrades to the existing Touch handset. As you might not expect, the Touch 3G has HSDPA support, while the Viva makes do with EDGE a much slower processor, and a range of colours.
