Hands-on with the Apple MacBook
By Julian Prokaza on Wednesday, 15 October 2008

Apple MacBook hands-on Apple didn’t hold a UK launch event to coincide with the one in the US yesterday, but it has now shipped out the new MacBook and MacBook Pro models for review.

We’ll post full reviews of both models in the next few days, but in the meantime, here’s a hands-on video with the MacBook.

Hands-on with the T-Mobile G1 Android smartphone
By Julian Prokaza on Wednesday, 01 October 2008

T-Mobile G1We still have a month to wait before the T-Mobile G1 Android-based smartphone is available in the UK, but we had the opportunity for some hands-on time earlier today at the mobile operator’s Winter Showcase event.

We sat down with T-Mobile’s Head of Internet and Entertainment, Richard Warmsley, who gave us a demo of the G1’s key features – watch the video, see a photo gallery and read our first impressions of the smartphone after the cut.

Hands-on with the Palm Treo Pro
By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 05 September 2008

Palm Treo ProWe’ve had the Palm Treo Pro in the Mobile Computer office for a couple of days now and to tide you over until we publish our full review, we’ve shot a hands-on video to give our first impressions of this Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional smartphone.

This is Pam's high-end business smartphone and it’s the first time it's come up with what we consider a standard set of modern smartphone features – Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS. Palm is pitching it as an alternative to the BlackBerry Bold, but while it’s a stylish little handset, we don’t really think it’s in the same league as the Bold, both in terms of design and usability.

We’ll post a first impressions video later today and a full review in a day or two, so in the meantime, here’s a video that shows this Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional smartphone – gasp! – being removed from its box.

Hands-on with the Asus U6 bamboo laptop
By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 08 August 2008

Asus U6 BambooAsus first unveiled its ‘Ecobook’ laptop over a year ago, but while the idea for a bamboo-clad portable made from recyclable plastic and other eco-friendly materials was a great one, production problems with the all-bamboo shell meant that it didn’t get much past the prototype stage.

The idea of using eco-friendly materials for its products is one that Asus appears to be committed too though, and bamboo will make an appearance on one of its laptops scheduled for release later this year – the U6 Bamboo. More details, lots of images and our hands-on video after the cut.

Hands-on with the Asus Eee PC 904
By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 25 July 2008

Asus Eee PC 904Asus has delivered what it says will be its last Eee PC portable for a while (other Eee-branded products are on the way, though) – the Eee PC 904. Essentially an Eee PC 900 in the Eee PC 1000's body, the idea is that it offers a large, comfortable keyboard at a commendably low price. We'll publish our review shortly, but in the meantime, here's a short video that shows the Eee PC 904 alongside the 1000.

First man in the London iPhone 3G queue bought his place on eBay
By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 11 July 2008

First iPhone 3G UK owner The was a healthy queue of people outside Apple’s Regent Street store in London this morning before the doors opened at 8.00am, along with a healthy number of journalists and camera crews. Mobile Computer was there and we spoke to the first person in the queue for the iPhone 3G.

We were expecting to hear that the #1 iPhone 3G fan had been there for at least 24 hours, but it turns out that he simply bought his place on eBay the night before for an “undisclosed sum” (but for less than the price of an iPhone 3G”, and turned up at 6.00am this morning to take his place.

The seller, apparently, intended to donate the auction proceeds to charity, so it was all for a good cause. Shame he didn’t hold out for more money, though… You can see our short interview with the first person in the iPhone 3G queue, along with footage of the 8.00am door opening, after the cut.

Hands-on video of the Asus Eee PC 1000
By Julian Prokaza on Thursday, 10 July 2008

Asus kindly dropped of yet another Eee PC earlier today – the Eee PC 1000-BK002. As we’ve already reported, this is a 10in screen netbook with an Intel Atom processor, but it’s essentially a scaled-up version of the Eee PC 901 and you’ll see the close resemblance with the two side-by-side.

Watch the video after the cut.

Watch the HTC Touch Diamond in slow motion...
By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 04 July 2008

HTC Touch Diamond hands-on videoWe've had the HTC Touch Diamond Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone in the Mobile Computer office for just over a week now and I'll be posting a full review in the next couple of days. In the meantime, I made a hands-on video report earlier today to show what the Touch Diamond looks like in a better context than a photo on a white background.

In the video I talk a little about the Touch Diamond's design (this is HTC's attempt to compete head-on with the iPhone) and more importantly, its TouchFLO 3D user interface. Now this slick Windows Mobile 'skin' has been widely criticised for being slow and HTC recently released a ROM update intended to fix it. So is Touch FLO 3D any snappier as a result? In a word, no...

Hands-on video of the Acer Aspire One
By Julian Prokaza on Wednesday, 18 June 2008

Acer Aspire OneWe’re still wrestling with our Acer Aspire One review model – it’s a pre-production unit that has so far refused to work. So, until we can get it running and review it properly, we’ve shot short hands-on video clip to give you an idea of how it compares to the Eee PC 901.

First impressions of the Acer Aspire One are certainly very positive. It feels well made and has a sleek, stylish design that belies the £199 price tag. We particularly like the curved edges of the glossy lid – like the Apple MacBook Air, it makes the laptop look slimmer than it really is, and that’s no bad thing.
