Sony Vaio TT roars into UK next month
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 21 October 2008

Sony Vaio TTThat Vaio TT we mentioned last month - Sony's finally got round to announcing its arrival here in the UK. The 'World's-lightest-Blu-Ray-laptopTM' that digs HD and can pack up to 256GB of SSD capacity in its 11in frame will go on sale, appropriately enough, on 11/11 for a starting price of £1599 with a 2GB RAM, 120GB hard drive combo.

That won't include the much vaunted Blu-Ray option but will include built-in HSDPA with a month's worth of T-Mobile service in the box, via a pre-pay SIM - although the TT won't be locked to the pink network if you've got other plans for your mobile browsing.

It'll also be one of the first laptops that punters will be able to customise internally using Vaio by You. Our cup floweth over. Make the jump for the full specs and press release.

Sony does a Dell - with custom Vaio ordering
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 21 October 2008

Sony Vaio by YouEver had a secret urge to customise your own Vaio? No? Well, listen up anyway. Sony's taken a leaf out of Dell's (note)book to launch Vaio by You, its cringingly titled new online ordering system.

Available via the Sony Style website it'll let you select a base model and then spec details such as the hard drive (or SSD of course), optical drive and operating system.

It'll all be very familiar to fans of Dell laptops but a brave new world for Sony, which notes that it'll mean you'll be able to buy a consumer-orientated CS1-Series with Vista Business and a Z2 workhorse with Vista Ultimate. Crazy, eigh?

The fun starts this Friday, 24th October. Should give you enough time to prepare for the thrill. Click through for the full press release.

Sony's Vaio NS1 heads for Europe
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 30 September 2008

Sony Vaio NS1Two weeks after it was unveiled in the States, Sony has said the Blu-Ray ready Vaio NS1 will be coming to our shores.

Announced today the 15.4in laptop gets Sony's 1280x800 X-black widescreen LCD with a Motion Eye webcam buried in the lid. Its top spec VGN-NS11Z/S comes with the aforementioned Blu-Ray combo drive for HD movie watching and DVD burning. Across the board the NS1 will also support speedy Draft-N Wireless.

Naturally there are also a few Sony style touches thrown in. "gently rounded edges" match the colour scheme's "soft tones", while, "the surface bears a subtle and delicate texture as pleasing to the touch as the colours are to the eye." Cute. Click through for the full specs and press release.

Sony's Vaio TT with Blu-Ray and 256GB SSD
By Nick Mansell on Thursday, 25 September 2008

Sony Vaio TT Crimson RedIf lightweight laptops with lightweight specs are getting you down, Sony has the antidote. The Vaio TT is a fully loaded machine yet only tips the scales at a smidgen (that's a technical term for 37g) over a kilogram.

Inside the typically Vaio-esque carbon-fibre case is not only an optional Blu-Ray player (making it the world's lightest Blu-Ray laptop) but also space for a whopping 256GB of solid state memory in two 128GB SSDs. Read on, chums.

Sony launches 18.4in Vaio notebooks
By Leon Bailey on Tuesday, 09 September 2008

Sony is bucking the trend for small-screened netbook computers with the launch of a notebook with an 18.4in display.

Dubbed the 'Super Notebook' (well, dubbed by Sony, anyway) the new Vaio AW series is pitched at imaging professionals. As such, they have been kitted out with screens capable of displaying full high-definition (HD) resolutions – 1900 x 1200 pixels.

There’s a fair bit more information about these new Vaios, as well as some details about some new desktops, but as they're all pretty niche products, we’ll leave it to Sony's press release (after the cut).

Sony recalls Vaio TZ models
By Leon Bailey on Thursday, 04 September 2008

Sony is recalling hundreds of thousands of Vaio notebooks for fear they might overheat. The issue relates to a wiring problem identified by Sony in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC).

According to the USCPSC, some 73,000 units are affected, though elsewhere others are reporting 440,000 – perhaps because they cribbed the story from the BBC News Online report on the same. Anyway, the full text of the recall is after the cut, with the links you need.

Sony celebrates ten years of Vaio with four new models
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 15 July 2008

Sony Vaio ZIs it really ten years since we caressed that first magnesium-clad Vaio PCG-505? Ah, how time flies. But enough of this misty eyed nostalgia, Sony has four new machines for us to cuddle up to - and all powered by Intel's spangly new Centrino 2 processors.

First up is the new Z-series - 13.1in of super-strong "advanced carbon fibre" with up to 1600x900 resolution and the option of a 128MB SSD. Its special party trick is the inclusion of two graphics options - a power hungry NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS chip for when 3D performance is needed and battery sipping Intel Integrated graphics for when you're browsing the web or checking out spreadsheets. By switching mid-task the Z's battery life can be extended to over five hours. Read on for details and pics of the other three.

New Sony Vaios show up online
By Nick Mansell on Monday, 30 June 2008

Sony Vaio FW seriesLast week, the online forum notebookreview.com unearthed the first details on Sony's rumoured SR and FW series - now it appears to have found confirmation. Both laptops have shown up on Circuit City's website. They were swiftly taken down, but not before several people managed to save the pages.

The 16.4in Sony VAIO FW, shown in white, is a multimedia-savvy laptop designed to replace the FZ series. Circuit City listed it as shipping with a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo T8400, 4GB DDR2 RAM and a 250GB 5400rpm hard drive for $1149.99 - that's without the optional Blu-Ray...

Sony VAIO VGN-TZ31MN/N
By Matthew Sparkes on Tuesday, 18 March 2008

Sony VAIO TZ31MNThe Sony VAIO VGN-TZ31MN/N is an important laptop for Sony – it’s been a big player in the ultra-portable market for some time, but a host of competitors have emerged in the last few months that look set to steal some of its market share.

The Eee PC massively undercut most manufacturers on price and offered unprecedented portability for a budget machine; the Lenovo X300 ThinkPad brought features galore in a tiny package, as long as money was no object; and the Apple MacBook Air offers unrivalled style and a razor-thin chassis. So, the new TZ31MN is Sony’s answer to these pretenders to the ultra-portable throne.
