New Palm is just the icing on the cake
By Leon Bailey on Thursday, 11 September 2008

Overlooking for a moment to question why anyone would bother in the first place, we accept that it can’t be terribly easy to make and bake a cake that looks like a Palm Treo smartphone. But really, does the end result – pictured on the left here – really justify the effort of 4.5 hours’ labour?

Writing on the Official Palm Blog website, Jon Zilber today highlights the culinary crafts of Palm fan Lisa Aiken, who runs a soap business by day. However, by night she likes to bake and, as she also loves her Treo 750, she decided to bake a Treo 750 cake, filled with strawberry and butter-cream icing. As you do.

As it’s a slow news day, there’s a bit more on this after the, er, slice.

Apple iPhone 3G battery life 'best'. But still bad
By Leon Bailey on Monday, 14 July 2008

Our friends over at the PC World Test Center have determined that the iPhone 3G’s battery life is just 5 hours 38 minutes – but still better than that of the competition.

During tests connecting the iPhone 3G to AT&T’s HSDPA/UMTS network, PC World’s tech guys determined that users of Apple’s 1m-selling handset could natter away for that amount of time before the power cells would flake out.

That compares badly with the original iPhone’s ability to manage 10 hours during similar tests on EDGE carried out by PC World last year. But the surprise news is that, even at a semi over 5 hours, the iPhone 3G’s battery performance is better than the competition. Yep, we said better. Read on after the cut to find out how much better.

Palm Treo 850 pics: Wi-Fi included?
By Leon Bailey on Friday, 23 May 2008

The Boy Genius Report appears to have bagged another Palm exclusive, this time in the shape of some Treo 850 pictures.

Look closely at the fuzzy main image over at BGR (or replicated her, for your viewing convenience) and you’ll notice that Internet Explorer appears to show the device to indeed be a release candidate one (RC1) Treo 850.

Wi-Fi Palm Treo on the way?
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 22 April 2008

Palm's Treo 800w?It seems Palm may be sending out samples of its much-rumoured Treo 800w out to selected testers in the States. An email sent to certain customers asks for, "people in an enterprise environment who want to an innovative device for connectivity from Palm".

Among the requirements for the testers are access to Wi-Fi and heavy email use. So we could finally see a Palm with built-in Wi-Fi!

A Treo launch is already slated for the summer. Leaks from the US carrier, Sprint, suggest it'll pack Windows Mobile 6.1. Watch this space for more.

By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 25 January 2008

Palm Treo 500If you’ve been yearning for a Palm Treo 500v but don’t want to switch to Vodafone, here’s some good news – an unlocked version is now available for pre-order from the Palm website.

The Treo 500 (the ‘v’ epithet of the earlier model was for Vodafone) runs Windows Mobile 6 Standard and is only available in ‘charcoal grey’. Or ‘grey’, in other words. It costs £269 and will be available from 28 January both from Palm and retail outlets.

Pay-as-you-go Palm Treo 500v to cost £220 with Vodafone
By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 05 October 2007

Vodafone has just announced its price plans for the Palm Treo 500v - the smartphone is available from stores today. The 500v is free for pay monthly customers, or £220 on pay-as-you-go.

Palm Treo 500v
By Julian Prokaza on Thursday, 20 September 2007

Palm Treo 500It's taken a while, but manufacturers are finally realising that smartphones don't just appeal to business users. Mobile email is a killer application for consumers too, but complex and costly hardware is a big disincentive for anyone looking to dabble.

HTC was the first to figure out that a sexy, streamlined smartphone might catch on with consumers, but its Touch turned out to be a touch too simplistic for our liking. Now Palm is having a go and given its track record for coming up with user-friendly handhelds, the new Treo 500v should have something of a head start.

How to perform a hard reset on a Palm Treo 500v
By Julian Prokaza on Sunday, 16 September 2007

Palm Treo 500vThe Treo 500v doesn't have a reset button, and Palm has yet to explain how to perform a hard reset to wipe all user data from the device. Here's how to do it:

  1. Turn the handset off using the power button on the top edge.
  2. Hold down the red Call End button on the right of the device and keep it pressed while you press the power button to turn the handset on again.
  3. An on-screen message will prompt you to press Up on the five-way navigator button or Down if you want to cancel the operation – release the power and Call End buttons, and press Up to begin the reset operation.
  4. Wait several seconds while your data is erased and the Treo 500v is restored to its factory-fresh state.

Palm launches Treo 500v with Vodafone
By Julian Prokaza on Wednesday, 12 September 2007

Palm Treo 500vSo it wasn't the Centro after all, but the Treo 500v - a 3G Windows Mobile smartphone for consumer, rather than business users.

The Treo 500v bears many of the design hallmarks of Palm's current Treo range, but is sleeker and much slimmer than any other model. It runs Windows Mobile 6 Standard (so no touch-screen or stylus), but the operating system has been extensively modified by Microsoft to make it more consumer friendly.

Palm Treo 750vPalm has confirmed that Treo 750 and 750v users will be able to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 for free, via the Palm website.

The Windows Mobile 6 upgrade also enables HSDPA on the Treo 750v for faster downloads when connected to a 3G network. The upgrade for the Treo 750v is available now from the Palm site; the upgrade for the Treo 750 is expected by the end of September, with the download location to be confirmed.
