Toshiba is one of the last laptop manufacturers to launch a netbook, but it has finally caved and the NB100 will be on sale at the end of October in the UK. As far as netbooks go, the NB100 is one of a handful that actually embrace the concept fully, in that it’s small, light and cheap.
We got to spend some time with a pre-production model and made a video of our first impressions – after the cut.
Two new business-minded Toshiba's are ready for your inspection this afternoon. First up is the Tecra R10, billed as Tosh's first sub-2kg 14-incher. Nudging up alongside it is the slightly meatier 15.4in Satellite Pro S300, that's been primed to take a chunk out of your desktop. Read on for the details and full press releases.
UPDATE:The full facts are in on the NB100 – details after the cut. But here's what we wrote earlier.
This photo is apparently a picture of the first Toshiba netbook. We say 'apparently' because we received it this morning in an email from a trusted PR source.
However, although the email was headed "Toshiba brings its quality story to netbook market", suggesting an accompanying press release, the message body was empty. All the email contained was this picture as an attachment. So, we’re pretty confident that it’s a picture of the first Toshiba netbook but we can’t be entirely sure.
We have of course emailed our contact right back to ask for more information but as we like to get stuff to you as quickly as possible, and just in case we've been the lucky recipients of an unintended leak, we thought you’d like to pore over the picture in the meantime. Sorry about the low resolution – it’s all we have right now.
UPDATE: Full specifications and price after the cut, so do click.
Toshiba's come up with its own mini PC, more reminiscent of Samsung's ill-fated Q1 than Asus's high-flying Eee.
The miniature MID – or Mobile Internet Device – has a 5.6in screen, GPS, a 64GB SSD and touts an Intel Atom processor. Eagles eyed observers will also notice the lack of any keyboard – that's caused a few issues with typing, with users noting that the
touch screen keyboard consumes two thirds of the display when in use.
Not to be outdone by Sony and Lenovo, Toshiba has unveiled twelve updated new models, all fitted out with Intel's spangly new Centrino 2 processor.
The line-up includes eight new Satellites and Satellite Pros, plus a style-centric Portégé M800 and three hard-core Qosmio gaming rigs.
The new Qosmios each get 'Quad Core' billing. Before you get too excited, that's Toshiba's 'Quad Core' HD Processor SpursEngine SE1000 - a dedicated chip for handling tasks such as HD video playback and editing - rather than any main CPU quadcore shenanigans.
Click through for the full press releases. And we mean full.
RIM’s BlackBerry was the first smartphone to bring the delights of instant, push email to the business masses and it has been much copied over the years. No manufacturer has taken it quite to the same extreme as Toshiba, however, whose Portégé G710 apes not only the BlackBerry’s slab-style Qwerty keyboard, but also the navigation method.
Toshiba's been busy knocking out not only the world's first laptop with a 128GB SSD, but also the first series of laptops with dedicated processors for upscaling DVDs to HD quality.
The 12.1in Portégé R500-S5007V is the model getting the 128GB SSD
makeover. Having all that solid state memory onboard does bump the
price up to $2,999 in the US, but that's still less than Apple charges
for the 64GB SSD version of its MacBook Air, which sells for $3,146 in
the States.
Toshiba also claims that, at 1.09kg, it's "the world’s lightest laptop
with a 128GB SSD and DVD SuperMulti drive." Given that it's just about
the only laptop with that combination you could also argue that it's
the heaviest, but you get the point.
The Toshiba production line rumbles on, this time serving up the new 13.3in Portégé M800. Weighing in at just under 2kg it gets a 'white pearl' finish with silver trimmings and added white LEDs.
Inside lies a 2GHz Core 2 Duo T5750, 1GB RAM, 250GB hard drive, DVD burner and three USB ports. The display is a WXGA 1280x800 panel with on-board Intel GMA X3100 graphics and it runs Vista Home Premium.
It's slated to land in Europe sometime between July and September but there's no details yet on pricing.
Yet more from Toshiba, which has taken the wraps off four new models, including what it says is the first UK laptop to come loaded with a 128GB SSD. The Portégé R500-12S follows the same super lightweight mould as the R500-126 but doubles the SSD capacity on board. It combines it with an ultra-low voltage Core2 Duo U7700, 2GB of RAM and and a 12in LED backlit TFT screen.
That's according to Toshiba President, Shozo Saito, who's promised that within three years 25% of new laptops will use solid state drives. Of course, that'll require a big leap in capacity and a significant dip in price. Well, check and check. Old Saito's not only revealed that Toshiba will soon be launching a 512GB SSD, but he also believes that prices will fall by 40-50% every twelve months. By our calculations that could see a £2000 128GB SSD coming in at under £250 by 2011. Should give us just enough time to save up.
