T-Mobile G1
By Julian Prokaza on Thursday, 20 November 2008

T-Mobile G1Given the runaway success of the iPhone with consumers and the entrenched position of both Windows Mobile and the BlackBerry with business users, you might wonder why anyone would want to launch another new smartphone platform. Of course Google isn’t just anyone, but there were still some doubtful mutterings when it announced its open source Android operating system and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) in November 2007.

Well, one year later and the first ‘Googlephone’ is here and although there are a number of handset manufacturers and mobile operators in the OHA, the first Android-powered device to go on sale is from T-Mobile. Here’s our review.

T-Mobile G1 handsets now shipping with 3.5mm adapter
By Leon Bailey on Thursday, 20 November 2008

According to the forum denizens of TmoNews, new recipients of the T-Mobile G1 are opening their boxes to find a 3.5mm headphone adapter.

The lack of a 3.5mm jack socket on the G1 was seen as an odd omission, a fact note in our G1 first impressions video. Instead, the G1 has only a mini-USB socket, tying the owner to the supplied headset.

But if the posters over at TmoNews are to be believed, then T-Mobile has had a fit of common sense and is now putting 3.5mm adapters in all new G1s

Whether or not existing customers will be able to get their hands on this gizmo isn’t yet clear: at the time of posting, at least, we couldn’t find the pictured connector on sale as an accessory on the T-Mobile website.

T-Mobile G1 first impressions video
By Julian Prokaza on Monday, 17 November 2008

T-Mobile G1It may have been on sale since the end of October, but a “limited supply of review units” (always an interesting concept when applied to a mass-market consumer product that’s launched worldwide) has meant that we’ve had to wait a few weeks to get a T-Mobile G1 for review. Still, it’s here now, so in the time-honoured tradition, here’s a first-impressions video prior to our full review.

Turn your G1 into a tethered 3G modem
By Leon Bailey on Thursday, 06 November 2008

Though expressly against T-Mobile’s terms and conditions, some clever chap over at the TmoNews forums has put together a step-by-step guide to tethering the G1 to a computer so that it can be used as a 3G modem.

Now, in an ideal world, we’d run our own step-by-step guide to this process but, as we still haven’t been loaned a G1 review sample, we can’t – sorry. However, TmoNews poster bdogg64’s instructions seem pretty clear, if a tad convoluted (though he can hardly be blamed for detailing the process). More after the cut.

T-Mobile G1 UK on-sale date: October 30th
By Leon Bailey on Wednesday, 15 October 2008

The headline says it all: the Google Android-parading G1 will be available from T-Mobile in the UK from October 30th. And you can pre-order right now, should be so inclined.

Because we know you like them, we’ll paste the full release from T-Mobile after the cut. But, in the unlikely event you’ve missed all the hype surrounding the build up to the launch of Android and the G1, then here’s a summary.

We first heard about the Android platform in November last year. There’s been plenty of chatter about it since then, climaxing with our hands-on with the G1 just a couple of weeks ago. If you want to play with it yourself, there’s even an online G1 emulator. And now onto the release!

Get hands on with T-Mobile's G1 right now
By Leon Bailey on Monday, 06 October 2008

We still have a few weeks to wait before T-Mobile’s Android-based G1 smartphone is available in the UK but, if our earlier hands-on with the device has left you wanting more, then you’ll be thrilled to hear that the mobile operator has made available an online G1 emulator.

Head on over to http://tmobile.modeaondemand.com/htc/g1, click the Emulator link and away you go.

As well, the website hosts a 360-degree view of the G1, allowing you to flip the phone around to view it from all angles. You can even flick the screen open and closed without fear of the plastic gearing snapping. Great fun but why isn't the browser screen fully enabled?

Google changes mind - Android does support Google Apps push
By Ian Betteridge on Friday, 03 October 2008

Google Apps on AndroidEarlier this week, we wrote that the upcoming T-Mobile G1 didn't fully support Google Apps customers who have their own domains. At the time, the statement we received from Google confirming this omission raised a few questions – after all, the Apps version of Gmail runs on the same underlying framework as the consumer one.

Now it seems that information provided by Google wasn't quite correct. In fact, the T-Mobile G1 does support Google's enterprise customers using Google Apps on their own domains. Confused? You won't be – after the cut...

Share your T-Mobile broadband with a share dock
By Nick Mansell on Thursday, 02 October 2008

T-Mobile Mobile Broadband Share DockShare and share alike, we always say, and T-Mobile agrees. It's just busted out this Mobile Broadband Share Dock (catchy, eigh?) to turn your humble T-Mobile dongle into a mini, Wi-Fi equipped router.

In theory there's no limit to how many people can hop on your HSDPA hotspot for the frag fest to end all frag fests but bandwidth issues mean that T-Mobile suggests you limit your sharing to three users. But, hey, three's a crowd, right?

The dock costs £20 a month on an 18-month contract but that does include the dongle. If you've already got yourself a mobile broadband plan with T-Mobile then a quick call to customer services should get you a price to upgrade. Find it in T-Mobile stores and online in the next few days.

Hands-on with the T-Mobile G1 Android smartphone
By Julian Prokaza on Wednesday, 01 October 2008

T-Mobile G1We still have a month to wait before the T-Mobile G1 Android-based smartphone is available in the UK, but we had the opportunity for some hands-on time earlier today at the mobile operator’s Winter Showcase event.

We sat down with T-Mobile’s Head of Internet and Entertainment, Richard Warmsley, who gave us a demo of the G1’s key features – watch the video, see a photo gallery and read our first impressions of the smartphone after the cut.

T-Mobile G1 Android smartphone lacks push for Google Apps?
By Ian Betteridge on Tuesday, 30 September 2008

T-Mobile G1Thinking of using your brand-new T-Mobile G1 with your Google Apps email, contacts and calendar? Think again – the first Android-based smartphone only supports push email, contacts and calendar from "regular" Gmail accounts, not those based on the company's business-class services.

We noticed that none of the G1 demos that have appeared online show anything other than a Gmail account in use with it, so we dropped Google's press office a line to check it worked with the versions of their services which work with your own unique domain name. Read what it said after the cut...
