It's not much use having an indestructible laptop capabale of resisting soaring temperatures if you can't see the screen for the blazing sun. Good job, then, that Getac has fitted out its tank-like V100 tablet with an optional new Sunlight-Readable LCD display.
The screen boasts a brightness of 1200cd/msq – which Getac claims is the highest in the industry. And before you ask, the LED backlit display doesn't place any more strain in the battery.
In addition to its powers of brightness the new screen uses an, "active anti-reflective process," to block any reflected light, thus boosting visibility even further. Now, if only we had any bright sunlight to test it with.
Having seen Fujitsu's tiny 5.6in Lifebook gracing display stands with 'look but don't touch' signs attached, we've finally got a full run down of the spec sheet and some decent hands-on photos.
The snaps and specs have appeared on Vietemese forum, Tinhe te, and confirm that the U2010 will come with the option of a 1.6 or 1.8Ghz Atom processor, 1GB RAM and an 80GB hard drive. Click through for more details and images.
It's not the first time we've heard rumours of a 'Newton 2.0' (kudos if Apple ever uses that name again) or a tablet Mac but the whisperings have been ratcheted up a notch by a posting at MacDailyNews.
According to the same person who tipped them about the wireless iTunes store a week before it was announced, a MacBook Touch is on the way, "by October at the latest." Read on for more.
While we can't move for 8.9in Eee clones, we're yet to see one that's designed as a tablet. Gigabyte's M912 is just such a beast and, despite there still being no news on when it will shipping, the good folks over at Expansys have already placed it up for pre-ordering.
The two models on offer both feature 1.6GHz Atom processors, 1280x768 rotating touch screens, 1GB RAM and 160GB hard drives. Prices differ depending on which OS you go for with the XP-toting M192X costing £374.95, while the Vista-loving M192V goes for a slightly higher £399.95.
Despite sounding like a Siberian correctional facility, the Agliz 10 is actually a ruggedised tablet PC designed to laugh in the face of hazards that would flatten lesser laptops.
The XP powered handheld can survive in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, to plus 60 degrees - just your average July day in the UK, then.
Tested to military standards (that's MIL-STD-810F, for those who are interested) it can withstand dust, water and '26 drops from 3ft', which makes us wonder what happens on the 27th plummet. Click through for the full specs:
When it comes to showing just how tough a rugged laptop is, we can think of better ways than using one for an impromptu bit of hammering, but what do we know?
By using its xTablet to hammer a nail in to a piece of wood, MobileDemand hopes to show just how durable this chunky Tablet PC really is – and it's attached an accelerometer to one side to show just how big a beating it takes in the process. And with the cack-handed carpentry complete, the xTablet has suffered just a little case damage, yet is still “running like a champ”. Video after the cut.
Are you an Apple fan in need of a tablet? We understand. So, too, it seems does Axiotron, occasional manufacturer of the ModBook, a MacBook that’s been turned into a Tablet PC-style keyboardless computer.
To explain, the ModBook isn’t new – it first surfaced at the 2007 Macworld Expo – but Axiotron has struggled for a year to get the machine to market. Now, though, it seems to be on top of matters, fulfilling outstanding orders and embarked on the fun task of delivering review units to the great and good of the world’s media.
That doesn’t (yet) include Mobile Computer but the higher-profile types at Ars Technica and The Unofficial Apple Weblog have detailed their experiences of what it’s like to use a keyboardless Mac. Links below.
Yet more from Toshiba, which has taken the wraps off four new models, including what it says is the first UK laptop to come loaded with a 128GB SSD. The Portégé R500-12S follows the same super lightweight mould as the R500-126 but doubles the SSD capacity on board. It combines it with an ultra-low voltage Core2 Duo U7700, 2GB of RAM and and a 12in LED backlit TFT screen.
Small, lightweight laptops are nothing new but it took the Asus Eee PC to bring the price down to a point where they were within the reach of most users. The Vye mini-v S37 has almost the same dimensions, but is a much more capable computer – and it runs Windows Vista. The catch is that this isn’t a low-cost laptop to play with in your spare time, but at £650, it’s still far cheaper than most ultra-portables.
Yes, they are still being made and Toshiba is the latest laptop manufacturer to launch a new range of tablet PCs. The two models in the new Portégé M700 series are Toshiba’s fourth take on the tablet concept and both are based on Intel Centrino vPro technology, with Core 2 Duo T7250 processors (based on the Merom platform, rather than the new 45nm Penryn).
