We’ve had to wait a while for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 – despite being announced way back in February, this Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone only recently went on sale. And then promptly sold out.
We’ve finally managed to get our hands on one though, so if you were holding off your next smartphone purchase until you could learn more about eh Xperia X1, this is what you’ve been waiting for. Or not, as you’ll see from our hands-on video…
Behold, the Sany Ericssan A800i. Yes, you read correctly, that's SANy EricsSAN - a barely concealed rip off of our Swedish friends, Sony Ericsson. It is, of course, from the land of the dodgy knock-off, China, where it's attempting to pass itself off as a Sony Ericsson Experia X1.
It's almost convincing – convincing that is if you conveniently ignore the lack of, er, a QWERTY keyboard, a touchscreen, 3G or Windows Mobile – oh and the fabulous build quality, of course. Still, we're sure purchasers will be more than delighted with the one megapixel camera (mysteriously labelled “8mp”) and the top-notch FM radio.
If you're after a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, bag one while they're still in stock. IDG's reporting that unspecified manufacturing delays are causing a shortage of X1 handsets across Sweden, Germany and here in the UK.
Sony Ericsson has only said that it doesn't, "want to go into detail regarding which materials are causing the problems," but has said that further stock is on the way.
Unfortunately, while Sweden will be getting fresh supplies in the next few days, the time frame for the Germans and us Brits is more like the next "couple of weeks".
Vodafone says it's yet to sell out but Expansys is awaiting stock on its sim-only phones - although it's hoping for more by the end of the week. Plans to launch elsewhere haven't been hit so let's hope the the stock here holds out till reinforcements arrive.
We've been able to get our hands on the shiny new Xperia X1 since the end of last month - for a price. But if sim-free isn't your style, you'll be pleased to learn that it's now available on Vodafone.
The touchscreen Sony Ericsson is free on the red network's 18-month contracts above £45 (which'll get you 900 minutes, unlimited texts and iPhone-matching unlimited data). If you only want to be tied for a year then you'll have to stump up an eye-watering £80 a month to get it for nowt, with none of the unlimited data and text privileges but a frankly rude 3000 minutes of talk.
For all the fuss around the launch of the first Google Android handset, the T-Mobile G1, other manufacturers haven't exactly been rushing to follow HTC's lead and bring out their own. But now Moto looks like it might be putting serious investment behind the platform.
Nine months after it was first announced, we finally have an official launch date for Sony Ericsson's Xperia X1 - and we don't have long to wait. Less than three weeks in fact because X-day is Tuesday 30th September.
Just last month there had been fears that the X1 could be delayed as long as January. Things looked brighter when 'before Christmas'
was mooted by a Sony Ericsson spokesman. Finally hopes were raised even
further when a rep let slip it would be landing at the beginning of October - well, out by a day isn't bad.
Hmm, let's see, a slider with a large screen, GPS, Wi-Fi and a decent camera - it's the Nokia N95, right? Wrong, it's Sony Ericsson's new G705, a phone it claims will help you "stay organised the stylish" - much like the N95 did two years ago.
Ok, we're getting pretty tired of charting the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1's rumoured launch date but the latest circle on the calendar has at least come from a Sony Ericcson spokesperson.
At a press conference yesterday, said rep told the Register that the highly anticipated Windows Mobile 6.1 device would be launched at the beginning of October in the UK, Germany and the US.
That would chime with the expected availability date of the second week in October previously given by Expansys. It has the Xperia X1 available for pre-order for £584.99, which is the best steer we have on price at the moment.
Have you been a good boy or girl? You must have because Sony Ericsson has confirmed the Xperia X1 WILL be here by Christmas - quashing rumours that it would be delayed till 2009.
Admittedly those rumours were fuelled by Sony Ericsson's own e-shop pegging the Xperia X1 as arriving in January. But, whatever, Sony Ericsson's Merran Wrigley has now told Reuters that it's made its list, it's checked it twice, and the Xperia will definitely be going head to head with the iPhone 3G by December.
"There is absolutely no delay. The product is on track," said Wrigley. "We have said it will roll out in Q4 and we are on target to do that."
We're leaving an nice Xperia shaped stocking by the fire right now.
Just when will we xperience the Xperia X1? Back in February, Sony Ericsson was confidently predicting the 'second half' of 2008. Then, earlier this week its own official e-shop placed it in its 'Coming Soon' section under January - before swiftly switching it back to October.
The Xperia X1 has also failed to make an appearance at IFA in Germany this week. So what's going on? Well, SE reps have been telling the Register that problems with Windows Mobile 6.2 caused its failure to show.
Nokia announced the N97 smartphone earlier today at Nokia World 2008 in Barcelona. The N97 is a Symbian-powered smartpone with a similar sli...
