Some confusion over at Palm this week. The US Palm Store website has sent fans into a flurry with an availablity status on the Palm Treo Pro of "IN STOCK, usually ships in 1 - 2 full bus. days."
Sadly for those who pre-ordered, that status seems a little premature. A Palm rep has told Treo Central that there was "an error with the site and the 1-2 business days listing is wrong," adding,"it may not ship until the 1st or 2nd week of October." Boo!
Incidentally, the UK store is still taking pre-orders for £399 despite saying that "Order fulfilment will commence... week beginning 15th September". Meanwhile Vodafone is taking Business orders, while Expansys estimates availability in five days.
Palm Treo Pro By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 12 September 2008
Given that it practically invented the smartphone, Palm really hasn’t done that much to impress of late. Shipping two million Centro devices is certainly a notable achievement, but that’s an entry-level rehash of a five-year old smartphone and Palm’s other handsets are barely more sophisticated.
Thankfully, someone seems to have lit a fire under Palm's collective ass and the new Treo Pro is by far its most capable smartphone to date. Unfortunately, merely being ‘capable’ isn’t quite enough for a smartphone these days, so the question has Palm done enough with the the Treo Pro to take on the likes of Apple, HTC and RIM?
Overlooking for a moment to question why anyone would bother in the first place, we accept that it can’t be terribly easy to make and bake a cake that looks like a Palm Treo smartphone. But really, does the end result – pictured on the left here – really justify the effort of 4.5 hours’ labour?
Writing on the Official Palm Blog website, Jon Zilber today highlights the culinary crafts of Palm fan Lisa Aiken, who runs a soap business by day. However, by night she likes to bake and, as she also loves her Treo 750, she decided to bake a Treo 750 cake, filled with strawberry and butter-cream icing. As you do.
As it’s a slow news day, there’s a bit more on this after the, er, slice.
We’ve had the Palm Treo Pro in the Mobile Computer office for a couple of days now and to tide you over until we publish our full review, we’ve shot a hands-on video to give our first impressions of this Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional smartphone.
This is Pam's high-end business smartphone and it’s the first time it's come up with what we consider a standard set of modern smartphone features – Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS. Palm is pitching it as an alternative to the BlackBerry Bold, but while it’s a stylish little handset, we don’t really think it’s in the same league as the Bold, both in terms of design and usability.
Palm formally launched its new Treo Pro smartphone (£399 contract-free) on Tuesday and we received our review unit last night. We’ll post a first impressions video later today and a full review in a day or two, so in the meantime, here’s a video that shows this Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional smartphone – gasp! – being removed from its box.
In a curious break with tradition, Palm has managed to keep its latest smartphone a secret until just days before its official announcement – we normally know what Palm has in pipeline months in advance.
Images and specifications of its new Windows Mobile-powered Treo Pro appeared online last Friday, followed by a video clip yesterday. Now the cat is officially out of the bag and Palm has confirmed that the Treo Pro will available in the UK in September contract-free for around £399. More info and the full specifications after the cut.
Holy crumpets! A new Palm - and it doesn't look like a dog. We'd even go as far as to say it looked 'sexy' - what have those Palm designers been up to?
Previously thought to be the Treo 850, but now dubbed the Treo Pro, images of the device were inadvertently (presumably) leaked on Palm's own website before being swiftly taken down. But, thankfully, WM Expert user scottymomo was quick enough to hit Shift, Print Screen, and take several screenshots.
The good news is it's fully loaded with Wi-Fi, a proper 3.5mm headphone jack and the trusty Treo ringer switch. The bad news (if you're a Palm fan) is it runs Widows Mobile rather than the long awaited new Palm OS. Still interested? Click through for a peek.
Our friends over at the PC World Test Center have determined that the iPhone 3G’s battery life is just 5 hours 38 minutes – but still better than that of the competition.
During tests connecting the iPhone 3G to AT&T’s HSDPA/UMTS network, PC World’s tech guys determined that users of Apple’s 1m-selling handset could natter away for that amount of time before the power cells would flake out.
That compares badly with the original iPhone’s ability to manage 10 hours during similar tests on EDGE carried out by PC World last year. But the surprise news is that, even at a semi over 5 hours, the iPhone 3G’s battery performance is better than the competition. Yep, we said better. Read on after the cut to find out how much better.
Okay, not quite but if you’re looking to pick up a new smartphone in the next three months, the odds are better than evens that you’ll plump for Apple’s new toy – at least according to a survey conducted by RBC Capital Markets.
When asked, 56% of around 3,600 members of RBC’s Technology Adoption Panel expressed a preference for the iPhone 3G. This contrasts with a figure of just 35% that emerged from a similar survey conducted by RBC before the announcement of the 3G model.
You’ll find more fun iPhone 3G forecasts after the jump.
