When Apple set up the app store it set an arbitrary $999.99 limit on the prices developers could charge for their software. It didn't, however, reckon on someone uploading a spoof "I Am Rich" app and charging customers the full $999.99 to be in on the joke.
For a dollar shy of a grand the "I Am Rich" app does little more than
display a glowing red gem on the iPhone's screen. In a show of
oppulence not seen since the launch of the first Vertu mobile phone,
the apps author, Armin Heinrich, gives its description as: "The red icon
on your iPhone or iPod Touch always reminds you (and others when you
show it to them) that you were able to afford this. It's a work of art
with no hidden function at all."
Imagine you wanted to use your iPhone to search for information on Buffalo-based experimental band, Damiera. Okay, so we know that you don’t want to do that but just imagine. Please?
Right, thanks. Now dig out your iPhone, fire up Safari and call up the search bar in the usual way. Type in "damiera" (without the quotes) and be careful not to make any mistakes. Did you make a mistake? We bet you did, even if you didn’t notice. Delete the word and try typing it again – and don’t be tempted to use backspace (you probably did the first time without even realising).
Try it letter by letter: D... A... M... I... and then what? If you manage to get past the ‘E’, you won’t get the ‘R’ – you’ll perhaps get a ‘T’. If you fail earlier, your ‘E’ might be an ‘R’. No matter what you try, the iPhone will not let you type ‘DAMIERA’ in one run without backspacing. Why? Well, our thoughts – and a video of the glitch in action – after the cut.
Ninety minutes after entering the Regent Street Apple Store at 8.00am this morning, the first person in the queue for the iPhone 3G still hadn’t managed to buy one. Apparently, the O2 activation server crashed shortly after the doors opened at iPhone stockists around the country, which means no one in the UK was able to buy an iPhone 3G.
The activation delays follow problems earlier in the week with O2's 'server meltdown' as customers tried to pre-order the iPhone 3G online ,and its subsequent requests to some customers for emailed scans of passports for 'identity checks'.
We spoke to people number #2 and #3 in the London Apple Store queue as they left the store after waiting for ninety minutes for their iPhones – after the cut.
We're at London's Apple Store on Regent Street this morning, watching the queue grow and grow. When we turned up, there wasn’t much a queue at all. But, it’s over an hour now since the first customer entered the shop to buy his iPhone 3G, and he still hasn’t emerged.
Rumours from inside the palace of all things Apple suggest that the iPhone activation gateway has "gone down". As a result, it's taking much longer to process customers than expected. That probably explains why we're standing around out here like journalistic lemons.
We will of course post updates as and when we get them, including the promised unboxing video and first-impressions review – assuming our own iPhone 3G purchase is delivered today.
Accidentally reformatting or deleting photos from a memory card full of digital snaps is one way to end a holiday on a low note, but it doesn’t mean your memories are gone forever. Zero Assumption Recovery can recover a variety of digital camera file formats from a memory card and it may just be enough get you out of a hole.
The application, ZAR for short, costs $49.95, but there’s a trial version that’s limited to recovering to contents of four folders each time you run it – which should be more than enough, given that most digital cameras store their photos in one or two folders.
