Nokia's just announced a new E-Series handset that bears a striking resemblance to one that appeared in a leaked video two months ago. Dubbed the E63 (rather than "E72" as it was badged in the vid) it'll actually sit alongside the E71 rather than nudge it from the shelves.
It's been pegged as the phone to give Nokia's BlackBerry rivalling E-Series the "mass market appeal" it craves. Given that it'll be up against the all-singing, all-dancing BlackBerry Storm, we'd seriously question that statement but the E63 does have one ace up its sleeve: price. Even before any network subsidies it'll sell for 199 Euros plus tax. At today's exchange rate and adding the VAT, that comes out at a sim-free price of just £195.
What with all our server shenanigans in recent days we didn’t get around to reporting the recent arrival in alpha of the Mobile Firefox web browser.
Well, anyway, it’s been out and about for a few days now, at least for those lucky (/unlucky) sorts who pack a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. However, less widely reported is the fact that Mobile Firefox – which carries the codename Fennec, presumably after the miniature African fox – is also available for the desktop. More after the cut.
Nokia's been a little modest in comparing the new 5800 XpressMusic to its closest rival the Apple iPhone 3G - and now we know why. News from India is that Nokia is prepping an even higher-end touchscreen to sit in its N-Series range and really take the fight to Apple. Read on.
Orange must be feeling a little left out with all the touchscreen exclusives available on O2 (iPhone 3G), vodafone (BlackBerry Storm) and T-Mobile (G1) but now it looks as if it's finally bagged one of its own. Rumour is its snared the newly announced Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (aka the Tube) as an Orange exclusive.
The news comes in the form of a snippet in the Guardian's review of the BlackBerry Storm. When comparing the various alternatives, Richard Wray writes: "Both the G1 and the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic - which by the way will be sold in the UK by Orange - have made use of tactile feedback."
So is this an educated guess or insider info? With UK availability not slated till early next year, it could be a while till we find out.
So the iPhone-killing, touchscreen, Nokia 'Tube' 5800 XpressMusic has finally arrived and the big news is - it isn't an iPhone killer. Not according to Nokia anyway. Stuff.tv was the first to get hold of one for a video rundown and, as it reports, Nokia's been at pains to avoid comparisons with Apple's 'Jesus Phone'.
Instead the Finns have pitched the 5800 to Stuff as "a music phone with some cool touchscreen abilities," or, in Nokia's own words: "a mobile device for music that brings innovative new features to the mass market." Read on for more.
Nokia's flagship N96 has finally gone on sale months after its launch way back in February. The bad news is it's only available SIM-free from Nokia's flagship stores in Regent Street and Heathrow Terminal 5 for a modest £535.
If that's too far to travel to get your iPlayer and N-Gage fix ,you can always order online from Nokia Shop or wait till 1st October when it'll be on sale to the great unwashed on 3, T-Mobile, Orange and Vodafone and at Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U stores
across the country.
As a sweetener, Nokia's chucking in a free N-Gage game and three months' worth of Nokia Maps for nowt. Can't say fairer than that.
Here's the closest close-up we've had of Nokia's long, long awaited Tube, or 8500 XpressMusic to give it its new long name.
The shot's been leaked on Czech website, mobli.cz, as the momentum builds towards its expected 2nd October launch next week. Click through for more details and the full size pic.
Several websites are reporting that Nokia sources are indicating an imminent launch on Nokia's touchscreen phone, codenamed the Tube or 8500. Both Pocket Lint and Mobile Entertainment state 2nd October as the day the Finns will be officially unveiling their iPhone 3G rival.
Pocket Lint has it pegged for announcement at the London launch of Nokia's Comes With Music service on the 2nd and states that it will be released under Nokia's XpressMusic brand.
What's this? Two new Nokia E-series messaging phones? Not from official sources, mind, but from a leaked video showing two previously unseen models, the E72 and the E75.
The video's been pulled from YouTube, where it was first spotted, but thankfully not from other sources - allowing us to get these screen grabs of the upcoming phones. Click through to have a peak and see the full video.
Not much to back this one up, other than a cited 'trusted source', but JAMP Blog (that's Just Another Mobile Phone Blog) is reporting that the long-awaited iPhone assassin from Nokia, the 8500 or Tube, will be out in the UK on 8th October.
Since the origin of this information is the same tipster who let JAMP know about the iPlayer's arrival on the Nokia N96 ahead of time, it does have a grain of credibility.
It also chimes with the previous hints we've had from Nokia, including its marketing director in India, Devinder Kishore, who said a touchscreen Nokia would be out "by the year-end".
So the 8500 could be here in less than a month. Look out iPhone.
