What with all our server shenanigans in recent days we didn’t get around to reporting the recent arrival in alpha of the Mobile Firefox web browser.
Well, anyway, it’s been out and about for a few days now, at least for those lucky (/unlucky) sorts who pack a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. However, less widely reported is the fact that Mobile Firefox – which carries the codename Fennec, presumably after the miniature African fox – is also available for the desktop. More after the cut.
Those of a nervous disposition should look away now. Retro OS fan, John Mason, has just installed Windows 3.1 on his Nokia N810.
After the success of running Android of the Nokia tablet we guess he just thought, 'why not?'
So if you're after some nostalgic computing fun, circa 1992, with TrueType fonts and Minesweeper, just head on over to here for DOSBOX and here for the instructions on how to install Windows.
What's better than a Nokia N810 Internet tablet? A Nokia N810 Internet tablet running Google's Android.
Folks on the Internet Tablet Talk forum have unearther the secret - and made installation as simple as loading up a standard app. Touchscreen, browser and maps are all reported to be working.
Step one is to download android.img.bz2 from here or here to the tablet's memory card. Then download and install android-installer.deb from here or here.
Then just reboot and hit the Android icon that will have appeared in the Nokia's extras menu. Simple. Just in case, the forum also has instructions for removing it and re-installing the original Nokia kernel.
Access has released a beta 2 of its Palm OS emulator for Nokia N-Series mobile internet devices. Garnet VM is available for OS2008, OS2007 and OS2006, which covers all three N-Series handhelds – the N810, N800 and N770.
Once installed, Garnet VM allows N-Series users to run the 30,000+ Palm OS applications in a small Window – PalmOS runs at 320 x 320, while N-Series devices have 800 x 480 displays. The emulation is pretty good and is certainly one way to wean yourself off a PalmOS device if there are applications you can’t live without, particularly contact and appointment management – one area where the N-Series is lacking.
A few weeks ago I was handed Nokia’s new N810 to review. “Great,” I thought, “I quite liked the N800 – the previous version – so let’s see what Nokia has done to improve things.” I lived with it for a few days, carrying it around my home, travelling to and from London with it in my pocket, connecting via Wi-Fi in coffee-shops and using a Bluetooth phone when on over-ground trains. It was fun.
I then submitted my Nokia N810 review. I’d have liked to play with the gadget for longer and written more, but web publishing isn’t good with long deadlines – everyone wants reviews of tomorrow’s products yesterday, or before – and opinion varies on the optimum length for these online assessments. I was commissioned for around 1,000 words, so that’s what I submitted. And then came the backlash...
Proper access to the internet from a pocket-sized device – that’s what the tech world craves. And last year, when Apple launched the iPhone, we almost got it. Okay, so Apple’s handset costs a pretty penny to buy (and fair few more to run) but the beautiful design and everything-just-works operation has won plenty of fans – including us.
Which brings us on to the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. A year or two ago, a gadget like this would’ve got us pretty excited. Today, we feel charitable even describing it as a less-good iPhone without the phone facilities. So what’s the problem? Well, actually there are a few of them, but let’s be nice and look at the good stuff first. There is some, right?
Nokia released the OS2008 operating system upgrade for its N800 Internet Tablet on Tuesday, which brings the device in line with the new keyboard-equipped N810. The download takes OS2008 for both the N800 and N810 out of beta and into the final production version, but the Nokia servers appear to be getting hammered at the moment though, and downloading the 135Mb file is still proving somewhat of a challenge for many owners (though mirror sites are starting to spring up).
