Asus has delivered what it says will be its last Eee PC portable for a while (other Eee-branded products are on the way, though) – the Eee PC 904. Essentially an Eee PC 900 in the Eee PC 1000's body, the idea is that it offers a large, comfortable keyboard at a commendably low price. We'll publish our review shortly, but in the meantime, here's a short video that shows the Eee PC 904 alongside the 1000.
Although the Eee PC 901 is perfectly proportioned for a netbook, we can’t help but admit that even we find its compact keyboard a little too cramped for day-to-day use. If you don’t mind carrying a slightly larger and heavier laptop around though, Asus now has yet another Eee PC model that addresses this problem – the Eee PC 1000.
The Eee PC 1000 is essentially just a scaled up Eee PC 901 – it has the same case design and a largely similar specification. The two most obvious differences are the larger 10in screen and the bigger keyboard, but there’s one change inside, too. The Windows XP model now comes with an 80Gb hard disk, though you can still opt for a 40Gb SSD (with an 8Gb primary and 32Gb secondary drive) Linux model if you prefer.
Asus kindly dropped of yet another Eee PC earlier today – the Eee PC 1000-BK002. As we’ve already reported, this is a 10in screen netbook with an Intel Atom processor, but it’s essentially a scaled-up version of the Eee PC 901 and you’ll see the close resemblance with the two side-by-side.
An MSI Wind-a-like has turned up on PC World's website sporting an identical chassis and near identical specs.
Customers are reporting that the only difference between the own-brand Advent 4211 and the MSI Wind is the battery. That and the price - a full £70 cheaper than the Wind U100!
At £279 with Windows XP it could be the bargain 10in UMPC of choice - especially as Asus's competing 10-incher, the Eee PC 1000, is also expected to be well over £300.
We've a full review of the MSI Wind here, and will be getting our hands on the Advent in a few days. Meanwhile click through for the full specs:
Murmurs appearing on Taiwanese site Digitimes are suggesting that Asus is about to launch two new Eee PCs that fuse the current 900 series with the new 1000 (pictured).
By keeping the same 8.9in screen of the 900 but placing it in 10.2in the body of the 1000, Asus hopes to create two inexpensive 8.9in models with more practical, larger keyboards.
The 904 and 905, as they've been dubbed, would get Intel Atom processors, and possibly larger batteries and greater storage.
Oddly, Digitimes sees them as eventually replacing the current 900 and 901 models, which seems a somewhat bizarre move as it would leave Asus without a true 8.9in sized laptop. Happy times for the competition should that happen.
Blogeee’s source of inside information at Asus has come up trumps again, supplying the French blog with photographs of the forthcoming Eee PC 1000. Elsewhere, Hexus has managed to capture a snapshot of a point-of-sale card (pic after the jump) that appears to carry the new UMPC’s specifications.
At the time of writing, Blogeee.net is down (probably due to traffic generated by the huge interest in all things Eee PC), but luckily for you we’ve gathered the pertinent points here. As this Blogeee photo composition (top left) shows, the 10in Eee PC 1000 is clearly bigger than the Eee PC 901, which is hardly surprising for a gadget sporting a larger 10in display. More specs after the jump.
