2008 hasn’t just been the year of the little, low-cost ultraportable , we’ve seen a few ultra-slim, ultra-pricey models too. The Apple MacBook Air kicked off the trend back in January and now with year almost at an end, along comes Samsung with the super-skinny X360 . And yes, it's very slim indeed – as you can see from our hands-on video.
Lenovo first announced the ThinkPad X200 at the Intel Centrino 2 launch back in July and we’ve been waiting patiently since then to get our hands on this new ultraportable. Well, it’s now in the Mobile Computer office and so we’ve shot a short video to give you a hands-on tour – after the cut.
Not to be outdone by Sony and Lenovo, Toshiba has unveiled twelve updated new models, all fitted out with Intel's spangly new Centrino 2 processor.
The line-up includes eight new Satellites and Satellite Pros, plus a style-centric Portégé M800 and three hard-core Qosmio gaming rigs.
The new Qosmios each get 'Quad Core' billing. Before you get too excited, that's Toshiba's 'Quad Core' HD Processor SpursEngine SE1000 - a dedicated chip for handling tasks such as HD video playback and editing - rather than any main CPU quadcore shenanigans.

We were expecting a raft of laptop updates following the release of Intel's new Centrino 2 . Acer has two new models, Sony has four. Raising the stakes just a tad is Lenovo, with 13 new Centrino 2 releases, including the ThinkPad X200.
The baker's dozen breaks down as four new IdeaPads, a trio of small-to-medium business ThinkPads, called the SL-series, and a further six ThinkPads of the R, T, X and W variety. Full details and a hands-on video of the ThinkPad X200 after the cut.
New Centrino 2 equipped laptops are coming thick and fast. Two of the first to hit the UK will be this pair from Acer. The 15.4in TravelMate 5730 and 17in TravelMate 7730 both get the new chip and all the battery life and other benefits it brings.
The business orientated 5730 comes with up to 2GB of dual-channel DDRII memory and the option of either the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470/HD 3650 or nVidia GeForce 9300M GS to replace the standard integrated graphics. It can also be specced with HSDPA mobile broadband.
Is it really ten years since we caressed that first magnesium-clad Vaio PCG-505? Ah, how time flies. But enough of this misty eyed nostalgia, Sony has four new machines for us to cuddle up to - and all powered by Intel's spangly new Centrino 2 processors.
First up is the new Z-series - 13.1in of super-strong "advanced carbon fibre" with up to 1600x900 resolution and the option of a 128MB SSD. Its special party trick is the inclusion of two graphics options - a power hungry NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS chip for when 3D performance is needed and battery sipping Intel Integrated graphics for when you're browsing the web or checking out spreadsheets. By switching mid-task the Z's battery life can be extended to over five hours. Read on for details and pics of the other three.
Intel has at last got around to launching its overdue Centrino 2 mobile platform, with a line-up of five Core 2 Duo chips. At the same time, the chip firm has announced that it will introduce a further eight ‘ultra-low voltage’ processors within the next 90 days, along with its first quad-core chips designed specifically for laptops.
And frankly, that’s about as exciting as this particular bit of processor news gets. Not very exciting, is it? But if you fancy a few more brain-aching stats about Intel’s latest wireless mobile wheeze, feel free to click the Read more link below.
Saving up for a Centrino 2 notebook? Then it looks like you’ll have a little longer to gather together sufficient cash to splash on Intel ’s next great mobile marchitecture adventure.
Tech site TG Daily is reporting that it has been told by sources close to Intel that the chip-maker will delay the introduction of Centrino 2, aka Montevina, until 14th July 2008. TG Daily calls this a ‘substantial’ delay.
Now, this might be considered true by the highly techie types who frequent TG Daily but come on, let’s have some perspective – it’s only a couple of weeks later than Intel’s intended roadmap. And no-one’s going to die for having to wait an extra fortnight to pick up a Centrino 2 notebook, are they?
If a report today by Digitimes is accurate then Intel will launch a series of solid-state drives (SSDs) by the end of this year.
The drives are expected to become part of the Centrino 2 platform, Digitimes reports “sources at PC makers” as saying. According to the story, Intel will call the new product line High Performance SSD and will target the gear at enterprise, mid-range and high-end notebook markets. There’s a bit more (dull) stuff after the jump.
