With its widescreen, European maps and Bluetooth, the S70 sits comfortably in the middle of Navman’s widescreen S-series models, between the UK and Ireland — only S50 and the fully-tooled N90, which adds its own camera and built-in TMC. It gets the same sleek, two-tone body and while it’s a touch plasticky and stockier than some, it's solid enough. The 4.3" display is clear and bright, and the rear speaker does a mean job of belting out instructions.
If your laptop doesn’t have an internal DVD writer, you don’t need to spend a fortune on an external model. LG’s GSA-E50N supports every disc format going and is one of the cheapest portable DVD writers we’ve seen.
If there’s one thing you shouldn’t do with a brand new laptop, it’s take it down to the beach, roll it around in the sand and drop it into a rocky pool. While such a day trip would spell the end for most laptops, some, like the Getac V100 Tablet, are made of sturdier stuff.
Smartphones have been around for a number of years now, but it’s only recently that consumers have begun to warm to the concept of having a mobile office in their pocket. It’s a phenomenon that E-TEN aims to capitalise on with its latest smartphone — the Glofiish X800. And with its bright, brassy colour scheme and slim profile, this phone is bound to attract its fair share of jealous glances.
Datawind's PocketSurfer 2 is a mobile internet browsing device. It connects to the web over GPRS, and the included SIM card comes with one year's worth of access, though that's limited to 20 hours per month. After the first year, you will need to pay £40 every 12
months to maintain this connection.
Last month saw the arrival of Apple’s latest iPods. But while the iPod Touch is arguably in a league of its own, we weren’t quite so bowled over by the new iPod Nano — its squat figure divided opinion in the Mobile office and the larger fingered members of the team just weren’t sure what to make of the shrunken scroll wheel. It wasn’t all bad, but compared to the Touch, is distinctly underwhelming, and now Creative’s new Zen is here, it's got some serious competition.
Having sat-nav software installed on your smartphone makes a lot of sense, particularly if it's one with built-in GPS. The small screens of most models won't give as good a view as a dedicated device, but since you always have your smartphone with you, you'll never be without an electronic route finder. In our opinion, TomTom rules the roost when it comes to smartphone sat-nav software, but with the release of version 7, CoPilot is now a serious alternative.
Given the blanket
coverage bestowed upon it since the 9th
November launch, you’re probably sick to the back teeth of the iPhone by
now. But whatever you think about Apple’s latest gadget, you have to admit that
it must be something special to have garnered quite so much media attention.
After using a UK model on the O2 network for a week, the fact of the matter
is that…. yes, the iPhone is something special. That’s not to say it isn’t without
it’s faults, but it’s perhaps the best smartphone we’ve ever reviewed, but not
for the reasons you might think.
CMS' latest product is supposed to make it easy to back up your data and then resume working from that backup in the event that your laptop is lost, stolen or just stops working. With a 160Gb portable USB hard disk and backup software in the box, CMS not only promise to keep your data safe, but secure too, thanks to 256-bit AES encryption.
Of all the gadgets unveiled at last June's Computex trade show in
Taiwan, few attracted as much attention as a pair of new ultra-portables PCs.
Both the ASUS Eee PC and VIA NanoBook were billed as low-cost, relatively low-specification
portables aimed at anyone who didn't want to lug a larger laptop around or pay
a fortune for a more traditional ultra-portable and in that respect, they made
a great deal of sense.
The Eee PC, of course, has been on sale since the beginning of November and
we
liked it a lot. The original intended price of $199 crept up to £220
by the time it launched but even so, it's still a cracking little laptop for
anyone who doesn't have much to spend. The VIA
NanoBook was reckoned to cost around $600, but it was just a reference design
for other manufacturers to pick up. So far, Packard Bell has been the only one
to show some interest (update: Everex will be launching a version as the Cloudbook in the US in early 2008) and its version, in the form of the EasyNote XS, is now
on sale.
