RIM’s BlackBerry was the first smartphone to bring the delights of instant, push email to the business masses and it has been much copied over the years. No manufacturer has taken it quite to the same extreme as Toshiba, however, whose Portégé G710 apes not only the BlackBerry’s slab-style Qwerty keyboard, but also the navigation method.
The rest of the world may have already reviewed the shiny new Diamond Windows Mobile smartphone, but HTC UK only got around to issuing review models to UK journalists last night.
So, since we have a new video camera to hand, we thought we’d shoot a little clip of – yes – the HTC Diamond box being opened for the very first time! Thrill at the novel pyramidal frustum prismatoid packaging! Gasp as the clear plastic protective strip is peeled away from the smartphone screen! Gaze in awe as the two parts of the cunningly designed mains adapter are clipped together! All that stuff, and more, after the cut.
Most people serious about their gaming choose a desktop PC for its power, value and ease of upgrades. Laptops aren’t well known for their gaming prowess and usually lag behind their PC counterparts where graphics technology is concerned.
It seems that no-one’s told Alienware, though, as the company has a long and fairly successful history of cramming insanely powerful hardware into both laptops and PCs. The company is now owned by Dell and while the Texan PC giant has its own XPS range of gaming laptops, the Area-51 m15x puts them well into the shade.
An external mouse and keyboard can work ergonomic wonders for a desk-bound laptop, but you’ll still be left looking down at the screen. If you’d like to avoid a stiff neck, one solution is a laptop stand, but while most simply angle the laptop just a little and leave it hogging valuable desk space, the Prop-Forward takes a different tack altogether.
If you’ve been hedging your bets when it comes to buying a low-cost laptop along the lines of the Asus Eee PC, you’ve been wise to keep your wallet closed for so long. Asus may have all but created the market for the ‘netbook’, but now other laptop manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon and the latest is Acer with its Aspire One.
We’re still wrestling with our Acer Aspire One review model – it’s a pre-production unit that has so far refused to work. So, until we can get it running and review it properly, we’ve shot short hands-on video clip to give you an idea of how it compares to the Eee PC 901 .
First impressions of the Acer Aspire One are certainly very positive. It feels well made and has a sleek, stylish design that belies the £199 price tag. We particularly like the curved edges of the glossy lid – like the Apple MacBook Air, it makes the laptop look slimmer than it really is, and that’s no bad thing.
Asus may have only launched the Eee PC 900 a couple of months ago, but it’s already defunct. Its 900MHz Celeron-M chip is effectively obsolete now that Intel has launched the cheaper, more frugal Atom processor, and existing stock will be sold off at a discounted price to make way for the all-new Atom-powered Eee PC 901.
Actually, the Eee PC 901 isn’t really ‘all-new’– it’s essentially just an Eee PC 900 with a different processor. Asus has made a few cosmetic tweaks to the case to mark the upgrade, but the 8.9in screen, small keyboard and other specifications remain the same.
Why is it that nearly all cameras designed for photography enthusiasts are bulky and expensive? There are surprisingly few compact cameras that include full manual controls and even fewer still that cost under £150. The A590 IS is one those few.
While Canon’s Ixus range gets all the groupies, the PowerShots are designed to appeal to people who care more about the look of their photos than of their camera. The PowerShot A590 IS sits towards the entry-level end of the range and is a strong candidate for enthusiasts on a strict budget, and also for digital SLR owners who want something lighter for more casual snapping.
Windows Mobile handsets are ten a penny these days, so manufacturers have to go that extra mile to if they want their products to stand out. The likes of eTen and Acer go for super-sexy designs; HTC crams in as many features as they possibly can; while others opt for innovative software or control methods.
More often than not, it's a combination of these things that helps a Windows Mobile handset to be successful though, and Gigabyte has chosen an innovative software interface, a good dollop of power and plenty of features for the new the G-Smart MS800.
If anyone had asked us to name a laptop manufacturer capable of producing a credible alternative to the Eee PC, the letters “HP” wouldn’t have been the first to trip from our lips. And yet here it is with the 2133 Mini-Note – the first low-cost ultraportable we’ve seen that to look more like a serious business tool rather than a novelty learning aid.
And there’s no ignoring the 2133 Mini-Note’s looks – it is absolutely gorgeous. Asus and Packard Bell may prefer cheap-looking plastic for their low-cost laptops, but not HP. The 2133 Mini-Note is clad in a sleek brushed aluminium case that looks and feels like a million dollars.
Despite being taken over by HP some time ago, gaming PC specialist Voodoo has managed to remain a company within a company under the HP umbrella.
