Tip for touch-Eee types
By Leon Bailey on Monday, 02 June 2008

Fed up of having to type on your Eee PC 701? Well, add a touch-screen, using the illustrated guide over at jkkmobile.

It looks as easy as pie, being apparently achievable in just nine steps. But best of all, there’s no soldering involved: just source the rather dodgy-looking parts and then do a little bending, snapping and clipping. But don’t blame us when your screen breaks and you later find out that the Far East supplier is restocking his shelves using your credit card details for payments.

Eee PC becomes less portable
By Leon Bailey on Monday, 02 June 2008

Read more...Asus seems intent on diluting its extraordinarily popular Eee PC brand until barely trace elements of the original remain. The newest reduction is the Eee Box B202, an Eee PC designed for, er, desktop use.

If that’s of interest to you then you’ll be glad to hear that the specifications for the Eee Box B202 have seemingly surfaced today over at HotHardware. Feel free to head right on over to HotHardware for the full low-down but if you fancy sticking with us instead, then the full specs are after the jump.

More Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 images surface
By Julian Prokaza on Monday, 02 June 2008

There’s still not much in the way of new information about the Xperia X1 , but Sony Ericsson has just released a bunch of new photos that make this Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone look more desirable than ever.

The images were posted on the Sony Ericsson Blog and show an X1 in a new colour, ‘Steel Silver’ (like there’s any other colour of steel…). The next Xperia X1 announcement is 17 June and there’s a Sony Ericsson press event in London that evening. Could the two events be related, we wonder..? Lots more pics after the cut.

HTC Dream swings into view
By Leon Bailey on Sunday, 01 June 2008

Read more...If you can stomach the sickening sound of a stadium echoing with sycophantic sighing then there’s an interesting YouTube clip to view over at IntoMobile, showing HTC’s much-anticipated, Android-based Dream smartphone in action. The site also gives some early specs, which we’ll come to presently.

But first, that video (link after the jump). It shows a pre-production Dream running Google Maps with Street View enabled. If you’ve not seen this before, it’s worth playing with on your PC but to see it running on a smartphone, apparently at a fine frame rate, is quite something. Adding to the effect is the Dream’s built-in compass, which has been employed here to track the movement’s of the demonstrator’s hands: as he turns, so to does the Street View in Google Maps. Okay, so the Google I/O conference audience’s full-on fawning is a bit over the top but even we acknowledge that it is a bit of a ‘wow’ moment.

Dressing-down for Dell over ‘£199 laptop’ advert
By Leon Bailey on Sunday, 01 June 2008

Read more...If you spotted an advert for a £199 laptop, how much would you expect to pay for it? How’s about nearly £100 more?

Well, some unfortunate customers of Dell ended up forking out as much as £293 for a machine they thought would cost them just a quid under £200. They had been misled by a Dell advert, against which complaints have been upheld by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Funny pong from Apple iPhone
By Leon Bailey on Saturday, 31 May 2008

What’s the best way to waste time with a state-of-the-art techno gadget like the iPhone? Why, use it to play a three-decades-old video game, of course.

As the above fuzzy little snapshot shows, these three iPhones are playing a version of the 1972 bat-and-ball game, Pong. Now, it’s a rubbish game by modern standards but what these chaps have done is really rather impressive.

According to Technabob, this picture and accompanying YouTube video (linked to over at Technabob) is a proof-of-concept demonstration showing how iPhones can be made to interact. The video is worth watching because the photo doesn’t give any clue as to the really clever part, on which more after the jump.

How to recover lost photos from a digital camera memory card
By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 30 May 2008

Accidentally reformatting or deleting photos from a memory card full of digital snaps is one way to end a holiday on a low note, but it doesn’t mean your memories are gone forever. Zero Assumption Recovery can recover a variety of digital camera file formats from a memory card and it may just be enough get you out of a hole.

The application, ZAR for short, costs $49.95, but there’s a trial version that’s limited to recovering to contents of four folders each time you run it – which should be more than enough, given that most digital cameras store their photos in one or two folders.

Asus offers £10 high-capacity battery upgrade for Eee PC 900
By Julian Prokaza on Thursday, 29 May 2008

Read more...Asus has finally decided to throw a bone to Eee PC 900 buyers who are unhappy that their laptops came with a smaller battery than expected.

Owners can send their original 4400mAh battery to an Asus service centre and for £10 + VAT (but inc P&P), they'll get a 5800mAh battery in return. Not quite the same as the free battery upgrade Asus extended to unhappy Hong Kong Eee PC 900 buyers, but better than nothing – and Asus was really under no obligation to anything at all, in this case

The offer is expected to be available from 10th June and in the meantime, Eee PC owners can download a BIOS update that Asus claims will add half an hour to battery life. Full details of the Asus announcement and the whole Eee PC 900 battery imbroglio after the cut.

Access releases VM Beta 2 PalmOS emulator for Nokia N810
By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 30 May 2008

Read more...Access has released a beta 2 of its Palm OS emulator for Nokia N-Series mobile internet devices. Garnet VM is available for OS2008, OS2007 and OS2006, which covers all three N-Series handhelds – the N810, N800 and N770.

Once installed, Garnet VM allows N-Series users to run the 30,000+ Palm OS applications in a small Window – PalmOS runs at 320 x 320, while N-Series devices have 800 x 480 displays. The emulation is pretty good and is certainly one way to wean yourself off a PalmOS device if there are applications you can’t live without, particularly contact and appointment management – one area where the N-Series is lacking.

By Julian Prokaza on Thursday, 29 May 2008

Read more...MSI dropped by this morning with an early production sample of its £329 Wind ultraportable and we spent some time getting familiar with this direct competitor to the Eee PC 900.

The MSI Wind goes on sale the second week of June in the UK, and will be formally launched at Computex on 3rd June. The full specification is already widely known, but we promised to play coy and not reveal what processor can be found in this particular model until the formal annnouncement. So, bear that in mind as you take a gander at the photos after the cut.
