Intel MID to deliver 'internet on the go' shocker
By Julian Prokaza on Monday, 14 April 2008

Read more...If you lie awake at night wondering about the point of Intel’s Mobile Internet Device concept, its latest marketing video won’t be sending you into slumber land any time soon. Its latest marketing video for the MID looks like it fell out of the Time Tunnel – a handheld device that can browse the web, send email, and play movies, music and games, yet still fit into a pocket (cargo pants not included)? They're kidding, right?

Chuck-away mobiles coming to Europe
By Nick Mansell on Friday, 11 April 2008

Read more...Ever felt like hurling your mobile from the car window in frustration? We may have the perfect phone for you. A new screenless, disposable handset is coming to Europe after an un-named distributor put down an order for 10,000 of the $20 (£10) talkpieces at the CTIA show in Las Vegas.

The chuckaple cellphone comes courtesy of Hop-on, maker of such gems as the ChitterChatter KidsPhone. It's already had some success in the US as the CDMA Hop1900. Hop-on reports that the first batches placed in convenience stores sold out in hours to curious shoppers impressed by the novelty of a working phone that could be binned after use.

Fujitsu's WoodShell laptop concept
By Nick Mansell on Friday, 11 April 2008

With all that plastic we hear about floating around in the world's oceans, laptop makers are turning to other materials. We've already seen Asus's bamboo line-up and now Fujitsu is showing its green credentials with a wooden concept model.

Dubbed the WoodShell, it sports a cedar wood case and 'bio-based' plastics on the inside. If wood's not your thing then there's the less snappily titled FMV-BIBLO NX95Y/D - already on sale in Japan - which uses the same eco-friendly bio-based plastic on the outside as well, using up fewer petrochemicals when it's made.

They'll both be making an appearance on the Japan Design Innovation stand at Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile interior design exhibition from Wednesday - should you be passing.

Aliph cracks another Jawbone
By Nick Mansell on Thursday, 10 April 2008

Looks like Aliph's cooking up another industrial design beauty to succeed its high-styled, hi-tech headset, the Jawbone. Aptly named the Jawbone 2, it's just been spotted going through its FCC inspection ahead of launch in the US.

From the photos and details submitted it looks to have lost none of its industrial chic but does appear to have lost a good deal of its bulk, judging by the handy ruler shown. We're liking the striking new redesign. Hopefully it'll sound just as good as the original, too.

Which mobile broadband deal is best for you?
By David Ludlow on Thursday, 10 April 2008

The novelty of video calling may have done little to entice customers to the 3G networks that mobile operators paid so much for back in 2000, but the offer of ubiquitous fast internet access is proving more popular. Adverts for mobile broadband are all over the place at the moment, but if the USB modems (or ‘dongles’) plastered across billboards and throughout newspapers all look the same, the deals from the different providers are anything but...

Virus numbers hit a million
By Nick Mansell on Thursday, 10 April 2008

Scanned your laptop for viruses lately? Symantec's latest figures show there are now over a million of them in circulation.

The latest edition of its twice-yearly Internet Security Threat Report says there are 1,122,311 nasties now attempting to attack your PC. In fact, last year was a busy time for Symantec, with 711,912 new threats - around two thirds of the total - arriving in 2007.

Not surprisingly, most were aimed at exploiting Windows. The report notes that "of the top 10 new malicious code families detected in the last six months of 2007, five were Trojans, two were worms, two were worms with a back door component, and one was a worm with a virus component."

It also points the finger at online file sharing with 40% of viruses making their way onto computers via executable file sharing in the last half of the year  - up from 14% in the first half of 2007.

Maybe it's time to cut back on the Limewire and download that anti-virus update that keeps getting put off.

Dell to launch own low-cost laptop?
By Nick Mansell on Wednesday, 09 April 2008

The Dow Jones newswire is reporting that an official at the Taiwanese laptop maker, Compal Electronics, has said it's building a new low-cost mini notebook for PC giant, Dell. According to the source, the Asus Eee competitor could launch as early as June - nicely timed for the launch of Intel's new Atom processor.

It's apparently aiming to ship out up to two million of the small-size laptops in 2008 alone. Details elsewhere on the web suggest it'll be an 8.9in model, selling for under $500, putting it in direct competition with the Eee PC 900 and HP Mini-Note.

There's no official word from the company, but Dell fans are already getting excited.

Microsoft's colourful laptop mouse is food for thought
By Nick Mansell on Wednesday, 09 April 2008

Laptops are becoming more colourful - and so are their mouses. Microsoft's launched an array of new hues for its best selling 'Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000' - with particularly tasteful names.

No longer just in plain old black, it'll now be available in 'milk chocolate' (top left), 'pomegranate' (top right), 'creme brulee' (middle), 'dragon fruit' (bottom left) and 'aloe' (bottom right). We're not sure whether to hook them up to the nearest USB port, or eat them.

They're out next month in the States. We're awaiting word on when they'll be available here.
