Ever lost a memory stick? Not to worry - the men and women charged with defending our freedoms have lost 131 of them since 2004, not to mention the 658 Ministry of Defence laptops that have also gone walkies.
The figures were uncovered by the Lib Dems in a parliamentary question to the Government, which also revealed that five pieces of the missing MoD kit held information classified as "secret". Whoops!
Take a quick look at the screenshot on the left. How many unread emails are sitting in the inbox? The notification icon might say '6' but the real answer is none: the supposedly-unread messages have either been previously read on another computer, are unimportant or – yikes – are simply spam.
And yet that annoying '6' will sit there and over time perhaps become a '7' or a '8', or a '100'. Indeed, if you’ve just set up your iPhone 3G and synched an existing inbox for the first time, that notification number might well read '500'. And it’ll do so until the messages are deleted from or read with the iPhone. This is because the iPhone software doesn’t have a 'mark as read' feature. It’s official, then: the iPhone is stupid.
How to solve the problem? Well, you can’t But read on for a sort-of workaround.
So, it took a mere five days for the iPhone 3G to be jailbroken and now the folks at iPhone Dev have released an iPhone 3G-friendly version of their 'Pwnage' software. The good news is it will jailbreak both iPhone 3G and 1st Gen iPhones running the new 2.0 firmware, allowing the installation of third party software not available via the iTunes App Store – and unlock 1st gen handsets for use with any SIM.
The bad news is it won't yet unlock iPhone 3Gs, so you're stuck with O2 for the time being. Given that all current 3G handsets are tethered to an O2 contract for 18 months anyway, that's not such a big issue, but it is a pain if you like to use SIM cards for local networks when you're abroad.
Just a week after it was launched , it looks like Apple has recognised that the battery life of the iPhone 3G isn’t everything it should be, judging by this leaked product page sent to us from an anonymous tipster.
The page from the Apple Store site shows a product called the USB Power Extender that claims to"charge and sync your iPhone or iPod wherever you are". The page isn't live on the Apple site yet (and there's no word from our tipster when it will be), but we have a screen grab and a high resolution image of the USB Power Extender after the cut.
Wish your shiny new iPhone 3G could pump stereo music to your stereo Bluetooth headphones? Don’t mind making your handset look really rather silly? Well, Brando’s new Infinxx AP 23 could be just the thing you need.
It’s essentially a dongle for the iPhone (or iPod Touch, Nano, Classic or Video for that matter) that plugs into the dock port and adds support for A2DP Bluetooth connections, so you can get the full left-right audio experience from your iPod software. It also supports the Bluetooth’s Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP), so you can have mastery over the iPhone’s playback from a distance.
It's worked on the PSP, the PS3 and Sony's Bravia tellies - now Sony's bring its XMB - Xross (cross) Media Bar - to its latest Vaios.
The Vaio FW series is the first to get the Vaio Media+ software. Based on the same left and right, up and down scrolling as XMB it aims to add the laptop to Sony's 'Digital Living Room' armoury.
Those of a nervous disposition should look away now. Retro OS fan, John Mason, has just installed Windows 3.1 on his Nokia N810.
After the success of running Android of the Nokia tablet we guess he just thought, 'why not?'
So if you're after some nostalgic computing fun, circa 1992, with TrueType fonts and Minesweeper, just head on over to here for DOSBOX and here for the instructions on how to install Windows.
While everyone else has been rushing out their Intel Centrino 2 laptops, a company called Actronix has been busy securing Intel's calssmate PC for UK kiddies.
The JumPC is a child-friendly lump of 7in laptop with a 900MHz Intel Celeron Mobile processor, 512MB of DDRII memory and 2GB flash memory. If that's a bit small for your requirements, there's also a 30GB hard drive version.
Obsessive gamers’ site Kotaku has posted a video interview with Sega’s American president, Simon Jeffery, in which he declares Apple’s iPhone to be as "powerful as the Dreamcast console". For the uninitiated, the Dreamcast was Sega's fine home games console before tranforming itself into a software-only outfit.
As well, albeit with tongue definitely in cheek, Jeffery acknowledged that for Sega, the iPhone was an alternative to developing a Dreamcast 2. This kind of talk will doubtless prompt endless calls for an iPhone port of Shenmue, and Jeffery did little to dissuade viewers by mentioning that Sega’s vast back catalogue of games puts the company in a good position to become a leading iPhone games developer.
All is not well in the Android application developer camp, according to a report at Ars Technica. Despite its noble intent of creating a mobile operating system that is completely open and free to use, Google appears to have been running a duplicitous two-tier development program for Android.
The problem stems from the software development kit (SDK) – the software developers need id they are two write programs for Android SDK dates back to February and is long overdue a refresh. Despite requests from developers, however, Google has so far kept quiet on both the SDK and the current state of the Android platform.
