Nokia N96 to land on 3 this September
By Nick Mansell on Wednesday, 23 July 2008

The N95 has been wearing Nokia's flagship crown for what seem like an eternity but its replacement is finally in sight. T3.com reports that 3 will be launching the new all-singing N96 in the UK in just two months' time.

As if to confirm the news, Play.com, which has been advertising the N96 for sale on pre-order, has just shifted its expected shipping date from 31st July to 30th September.

Like its predecessor, the N96 will have a 5MP Carl Zeiss-lensed camera, GPS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and the same dual-slide design but it will now come with twice the memory, 16GB, and a DVB-H receiver - should mobile TV ever get off the ground here.

3 will be offering it with its standard tariffs including the £15 a month Mix and Match option, making it a cheaper alternative to the iPhone 3G.

No AMD Atom competitor any time soon
By Nick Mansell on Wednesday, 23 July 2008

With the success of UMPCs and the current shortage of Intel Atom processors to go in them, hopes were that the world's second largest chip-maker, AMD, might come up with a rival.

Not so says its Chief Marketing Officer, Nigel Dessau. He's told eWeek that AMD will, "focus on what we do well at this point."

Dessau does admit that cheap, low-power processors are an important and growing segment but adds, "we are watching... rather than playing... as it matures we'll see where it goes."

In other words, don't hold your breath for any AMD-powered UMPCs in the forseeable - unless he's bluffing, of course...

How to decline iPhone calls from lock / sleep mode
By Scott Colvey on Wednesday, 23 July 2008

Read more...There’s plenty to like about the Apple iPhone. And just as much to drive you up the wall.

One annoyance for the Mobile Computer editor has been the apparent inability to decline calls received while the iPhone is asleep (or in lock mode). Sure, he argues, it is possible to let the call ring out until the voicemail picks it up – but it’s embarrassing to be stuck in a meeting with the iPhone bleating and vibrating.

But actually, our ed head has missed on not one but two call-handling tricks offered by iPhone, whether asleep or awake. Full details after the cut.

LG preparing Eee 901 challenger?
By Nick Mansell on Wednesday, 23 July 2008

Read more...While the legion of no-name Eee pretenders grows larger by the day, few of the mainstream tech giants have been keen to take-on the UMPC leader.

Now though, reports from German site Notebook Journal suggest the imminent arrival of a 9in LG, named the X110.

Qik opens up to public. Works on Apple iPhone, too
By Leon Bailey on Wednesday, 23 July 2008

Read more...Live video-streaming site Qik has moved from its invitation-only alpha stage to launch as a public beta. This means anyone who wants to can now use their mobile phone camera to broadcast video across the internet.

Qik requires the use of special software, which is free and downloaded and installed quickly and easily. However, only certain phones are supported – lots of Nokias and the odd Motorola and Samsung. For the full list of supported handsets, visit Qik’s sign-up page.

But what of Qik on iPhone – Apple’s handset doesn’t support video, does it? Oh yes it does. More after the cut.

Will Apple launch a MacBook Touch in October?
By Nick Mansell on Wednesday, 23 July 2008

Read more...It's not the first time we've heard rumours of a 'Newton 2.0' (kudos if Apple ever uses that name again) or a tablet Mac but the whisperings have been ratcheted up a notch by a posting at MacDailyNews.

According to the same person who tipped them about the wireless iTunes store a week before it was announced, a MacBook Touch is on the way, "by October at the latest." Read on for more.

How many websites do you visit to update your status each day? There's a strong chance you do this on at least one – probably Facebook, in the little box on your profile that lets your friends know what you're up to. Or, if you've bitten the microblogging bug, you might use Twitter.

But perhaps you use more than one, or even many services with this feature, in which case Ping.fm might just prove to be your killer social networking app.

Holy Nokia Tube, Batman!
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 22 July 2008

Looks like the upcoming, yet-to-be-announced, already-leaked, touchscreen Nokia Tube is the new Batphone. Stills from Batman: The Dark Knight movie show one of the phones in the hands of Bruce Wayne's business partner, Lucius Fox, played by Morgan Freeman.

The Tube, or 5800 XpressMedia phone as it's more formally known, is Nokia's answer to the Apple iPhone, running a touchscreen version of Series 60. Despite appearing in Nokia seminars on the Series 60, it is still most definitely an unofficial product, which makes this the most high profile leak in handset history.

It's not yet clear whether the phone in the film is a dummy or the real thing, but if Nokia is to get any mileage out of this product placement, an official announcement can surely only be days away. Meanwhile, get down to your local multiplex for a view of the Tube in action - and to watch Batman, of course.

Sony Ericsson's new Walkman trio
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 22 July 2008

Read more...It's three years since SonyEricsson's first Walkman phone, the W800, climbed onto the shelves to be filled with a heady mix of Coldplay, Scissor Sisters and Keane (remember them?). Three years on we've now got TrackID song recognition, SensMe mood-matching playback, Shake control - and this new little trio of phones.

Topping the bill is the W902 (pictured) with a CyberShot-worthy 5MP camera, 2.2-inch QVGA display and built-in stereo speakers. It gets the full complement of Shake, TrackID and SensMe features as well as the same music-playing hardware as the forthcoming, high-end, W980. An N95-matching 8GB Memory Stick Micro M2 card is also in the box to hold a healthy 8,000 songs.

Advent 4211
By Julian Prokaza on Monday, 21 July 2008

Read more...We’ve had cause to mention the Advent 4211 a few times in the last few weeks, but if you missed our previous coverage, here’s one-sentence recap: the Advent 4211 is essentially the MSI Wind U100 under a different name and with a much lower price.

MSI sells the Advent 4211 to Dixons Sales Group under an OEM arrangement and it does something similar with Medion and the Akoya Mini E1210 in Germany. The price difference, according to MSI, is due to the Advent having a lesser 12-month warranty (the Wind has two years) and less sparkly finish, but we suspect DSG’s more aggressive pricing strategy plays a part, too.
