Asus president, Jerry Shen has confirmed that not just new Eee PCs are on the way, but entirely new categories of Eees. As well as the current crop, which are being pitched - with all the allure of a pair of slacks - as 'Smart Casual', will be the 'Pro Fashion' and 'Ultimate' ranges, with added bells and whistles.
The two new ranges are expected later this year and will feature - get this - dual core Atom processors as well as boosted storage capacities with 120GB hard drives or 32GB SSDs. Click through for more.
For a fleeting moment one of the iPhone’s most-wanted features – tethering to a PC to function as a wireless modem – was a reality.
At some point yesterday a program called NetShare pitched up in the App Store. Published by Nullriver, a few folks coughed up the $9.99 asking price, downloaded NetShare and found that they were able to turn their iPhones into a mobile hotspot. Big w00ts all round.
Well, for about 30 minutes – before Apple saw fit to pull NetShare from the App Store. According to MacRumours, the reason for its removal is a complete mystery to the developer. Nullriver’s quote is pasted after the cut.
O2's come up with an attractive offer for mobile broadband users. It's giving customers who sign up to its £20 a month mobile broadband tariff free home broadband for a year.
For that you'll get 3GB of HSDPA data per month, unlimited access to O2's Wi-Fi hotspots (which includes BT's Openzone network) and O2's standard 8meg home broadband package. As a sweetener it's also throwing in a Wi-Fi router.
The offer's available from tomorrow till 31st October.
So, 3 was a little hasty with its N96 prediction. Nokia has just announced that the long-awaited N95 successor will be arriving on 1st October.
As well as 3, it'll be available on T-Mobile, Orange and Vodafone and at Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U.
If October is too long to wait then you can always try gettnig your paws on one early with Nokia's multimedia-heavy online competition to win one of 96 handsets.
If you've been one of the 'one percent' of users having serious trouble with the new MobileMe Mail, Apple has some good news.
It says it's solved the problem with one of its mail servers that caused a large number of customers to be blocked from using their email accounts for over a week. It also says it's managed to recover the emails dated 16th, 17th and 18th July that it thought had been lost to the digital ether forever.
Crack Far-East news source, Digitimes, has dug up another tasty news morsel with the story that ThinkPad maker Lenovo is cooking up an Eee-style 'netbook'.
Course, Lenovo is no stranger to slimmed down computing with the likes of the high-end X-series (pictured) but this would be a more consumer-focussed, low-cost model along more usual UMPC lines.
Digitimes say that Lenovo's Ken Wong has confirmed it's at least 'considering' the move - with investigations progressing as far as lining up three possible manufacturers.
The launch is pegged for as soon as September this year. If Lonovo can keep the build-quality high and the price low, it could well have a winner on its hands.
Garmin didn't see this jam coming. Yes, it's much anticipated iPhone/Thunder/Tube rival, the satnav specialising Nuvifone, has unfortunately hit delays.
Buried in Garmin's otherwise dull second quarter results is the news that: "The nuvifone will not be available in fourth quarter as previously announced. While we had hoped to have carrier launches in the fourth quarter, we have found that meeting some of the carrier specific requirements will take longer than anticipated."
"We remain pleased with carrier interest in the device and are working toward making necessary design changes to meet their requirements. We anticipate launching the product during the first half of 2009."
So that could be up to nine months later than planned or as soon as January. That would still see it arrive later than both RIM's Blackberry Thunder and Nokia's Tube, and possibly getting into iPhone 2 launch territory.
The term 'cloud computing' has been around so long now that you wonder why it isn't already part of the mainstream. That could, finally be about to happen though as three world tech giants, Intel, Yahoo and HP, have joined forces to drive the concept forward.
They're to set up six virtual (appropriately) research centres, each stocked with up to 4,000 computers, that'll look at ways to bring cloud computing to consumers.
Online storage, as being considered by Asus for its Eee PC, is an obvious starting point but the ambition is to take the idea much further. The Director of HP's Strategic Research Lab has told the BBC, "To my mind it is the natural evolution of the internet and if we look back in 15 years time we will be astounded by what cloud computing has allowed to happen."
The centres will be up and running by the end of this year. We await the results with interest.
The breakdown pinpoints apparent savings to be made by exploiting O2’s willingness to allow subscribers to switch tariffs after 9 months.
So, taking the 8GB iPhone as an example, plump for the £45 tariff and then downgrade to the £35 plan halfway through the 18-month term, it’s possible to save £9 over the term. This is because the £35 tariff has a £99 upfront fee for the iPhone, where the £45 plan has none. Simple maths and £9 saved, thank you very much Money[-]Saving Expert. But Lewis overlooks a much simpler way to save rather more money when bagging an iPhone. You’ll find our real money-saving tip after the cut.
For all those times you felt like driving a nine-inch nail through your laptop - you didn't actually do it though, right? - the peculiarly named Dutch outfit, Plankton, has come up with this: 'Nailed'.
It's a novelty 1GB USB stick that'll slot into your laptop's USB port and give you the nine-inch nail look you've always desired.
We don't suggest taking a hammer to it - for your data or your laptop's sake - but send us the photos if you do.
