Twitter cuts off UK SMS notifications
By Leon Bailey on Thursday, 14 August 2008

Read more...In a move set enrage at least half-a-dozen self-obsessed media idiots, macro-boring tool Twitter has turned off SMS (text message) notifications to UK mobile phone users.

In a message posted last night on the company blog, and Tweeted to his 14,000 followers, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone told Twitterers:

Let's start with the bad news. Beginning today, Twitter is no longer delivering outbound SMS over our UK number. If you have been receiving SMS updates from Twitter via +44 762 480 1423, you'll notice that they've stopped and you may want to explore some of the alternatives we're suggesting.

And what of the good news? More after the cut.

Qik launches live video-streaming beta for iPhone 3G
By Leon Bailey on Thursday, 14 August 2008

Read more...Hot on the heels of the launch of a similar service for the original iPhone, live-video-streaming outfit Qik has released a beta version of its software for the iPhone 3G.

However, as with the original iPhone Qik product, this latest release is only useful to those who have jailbroken, or are prepared to jailbreak, their 3G handsets.

With that done, getting Qik is a simple case of entering your details at http://qik.com/sign_up, which will result in the receipt of an activation SMS. Qik’s Michael Fortson says that Qik for the iPhone 3G will only work successfully over 3G or Wi-Fi, stating that EDGE networks are not up to the job of streaming video. In a video over at Qik, Forston demonstrates the iPhone 3G running Qik, though he doesn't mention whether the connection is Wi-Fi or 3G.

HTC Touch Pro goes on sale - for over £500!
By Nick Mansell on Wednesday, 13 August 2008

What do you get if you cross an HTC Touch Diamond with a QWERTY keypad?  - The HTC Touch Pro of course, and it's finally arrived.

It's in stock now at UK distributor Devicewire for a modest(!) £512.99 - or roughly £100 more than the keyboardless Diamond.

That price is sim-free of course so expect it to be a tad more affordable when it becomes available on contract.

How to run Flash on an iPhone (no jailbreak required)
By Scott Colvey on Wednesday, 13 August 2008

Read more...Look, we’ll be honest – what we’re about to reveal isn’t at all practical but if there’s a Flash-laden website that you really, really want to access from your iPhone then we’ve found a way to just that.

You won’t need to jailbreak the handset or do anything that might otherwise enrage Apple or your carrier. However, we stress again that we can’t conceive of many situations where this little idea of ours will be all that useful but, as our screenshots show, it IS possible to get an iPhone to display Flash content. How? Well, it’ll cost you a click, teasing tykes that we are. In other words, the answer is after the cut.

Celio Redfly Mobile Companion C8
By Julian Prokaza on Wednesday, 13 August 2008

Read more...If you’re on the lookout for a small, light, inexpensive laptop and are happy to sacrifice a few non-essential features for the sake of portability, then you certainly have plenty of choice at the moment. New netbooks are appearing on a regular basis, which means that even if there aren’t any models that take your fancy at the moment, there’s bound to be something to catch your eye by next month.

Alternatively, you could forget netbooks altogether and just stick with your smartphone. After all, many models now pack in as much power as a typical desktop PC of a few years ago, so why bother carrying around a netbook that just duplicates most of its functions?

That’s a question that Celio seeks to answer with the Redfly Mobile Companion C8. It may look like just another netbook, but in fact it’s a smartphone terminal designed for use with a Windows Mobile device. And what’s a ‘smartphone terminal,’ you ask? Read on to find out...

Android here in four weeks?
By Nick Mansell on Wednesday, 13 August 2008

Most news about Google's Android OS -aside from shaky video 'leaks' - has been all about delays, with only recent hope that Android handsets could be here by the end of the 2008. But now reports from the unofficial T-Mobile US blog, TmoNews, suggest the first Android phones could be up for 'pre-sale' as soon as 17th September.

A 'trusted source' has told the site that T-Mobile's HTC manufactured handset, which it calls the 'G1', will be offered to existing US customers for one week for $249 below the expected $399 retail price.

It adds that non T-Mobile customers will have to wait until October to snare the 3G phone, said to feature a 5 x 3in touchscreen, iPhone-beating 3mp camera and a slide-out QWERTY keypad.

VoIP comes to iPhone. But forget cheap net calls
By Leon Bailey on Tuesday, 12 August 2008

Read more...It’s no secret that Apple won’t sanction iPhone VoIP apps that route voice calls over 3G networks, because that would upset the firm’s many carrier partners. But an outfit called Global IP Solutions (GIPS) has announced the availability of a developers’ toolkit that will enable apps to push VoIP over Wi-Fi connections.

Called VoiceEngine Mobile, GIPS reckons that iPhone coders will be able to use the toolkit to integrate “quality, real-time VoIP applications, which makes it easier for consumers to enjoy their favourite iPhone games, applications and social-networking experiences.” That’s pretty much all you need to know about this particular news titbit. But for a bit of opinion, read on after the break.

'Unlocked iPhone' site scams customers for €700,000
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 12 August 2008

Read more...Customers of a Dutch website who paid upfront for unlocked iPhone 3Gs have been left out of pocket after the owner fled with €700,000 (£550,000) of their money.

According to The Register, the iPhonehelpdesk.nl website (Google cache pictured), run by 39-year-old Robert van Zanten, advertised the handsets shortly before the iPhone 3Gs launch last month. Claiming to have secured a batch of unlocked phones the site did swift trade with eager Apple fans ready to pay €575 for 8GB iPhone 3G's and €685 for a 16GB model, but only a handful ever received anything.
