By Julian Prokaza on Thursday, 18 October 2007

Read more...€749 - that's the price of an unlocked iPhone, according one online handset retailer in France. Phone&Phone lists "Prices without subscription" for the 8Gb iPhone as "3x 252,€67, or €749 TTC (Includes €9 registration fee)".

That equates to around £523 at current exchange rates – rather more than a £269 iPhone locked to O2, but less than the £900 or so that the iPhone's 18 month contract will ultimately cost.

Turn your old iPod Video into a new iPod Classic Print E-mail
By Julian Prokaza on Tuesday, 16 October 2007

Apple is renowned for not releasing updates to make new iPod features available for older models that are otherwise identical, but now you can do it yourself.

You need a 5G Video iPod to make use of the hack, which is available as a download from the DrivenDesign site. Once installed, you get the new split-screen menu system from the new iPod Classic, but there's no Cover Flow view -- yet.

Having seen it in action on the new Nano, I think the new interface looks like a terrible mish mash, but each to their own, I guess...

BBC offers free Wi-Fi access to new Flash-based iPlayer service Print E-mail
By Julian Prokaza on Tuesday, 16 October 2007

Read more...The BBC has announced that not only will it be teaming up with Adobe to offer a Flash-based version of its iPlayer catch-up TV service, but that the service will also be available free via The Cloud Wi-Fi hotspots.

The Beeb has been criticised for using Windows Media rather than an open source solution for its recently launched iPlayer service, not least because it means that programmes are only available to Windows users. The adoption of Adobe Flash for streaming video means that both Mac and Linux users will now be able to use iPlayer too. The Flash-based version of iPlayer should be available by the end of the year.

ThinkPad X60 Tablet PC screen bezel update Print E-mail
By Julian Prokaza on Monday, 15 October 2007

Read more...We reported on the screen bezel issue that's affecting certain ThinkPad X60 and X61 Tablet PCs back in August, but although Lenovo pledged to look into it, there's been no word since then.

We have an X60 Tablet in for a group test at the moment, and I can confirm that it too suffers from the same screen bezel problem. It only affects the bottom bezel (with the ThinkPad in laptop mode) and only on the left and right sides.
