Intel has used Computex 08 to announce the roll out of the Diamondville variant of its new Atom processor, which is broadly aimed at the UMPC sector. And that’s about all you need to know, unless you’re interested in the techie stuff – in which case, read on.
There are two chips in the line-up, the Atom N270 and the N230. The N270 is clocked at 1.6GHz, with a 533MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 512Kb of Level 2 (L2) cache. It has a thermal design power (TDP) of 2.5w. The N230, meanwhile, has the same clock speed (1.6GHz), FSB (533MHz) and L2 cache (512Kb) but has a TDP of 4w. There’s a bit more over at Intel but if you like such facts and figures, you know where to go.
Acer has announced its entry into the low-cost ultraportable market – the Aspire One. Based on an Intel Atom N270 processor running at 1.6GHz (same as on the MSI Wind), the Aspire One has an 8.9in (1024 x 600) LED-backlit screen and will ship with either Linux or Windows XP.
The Linux-based model will cost £199 inc VAT. Full story, specs and pics after the cut.
Blogeee’s source of inside information at Asus has come up trumps again, supplying the French blog with photographs of the forthcoming Eee PC 1000. Elsewhere, Hexus has managed to capture a snapshot of a point-of-sale card (pic after the jump) that appears to carry the new UMPC’s specifications.
At the time of writing, Blogeee.net is down (probably due to traffic generated by the huge interest in all things Eee PC), but luckily for you we’ve gathered the pertinent points here. As this Blogeee photo composition (top left) shows, the 10in Eee PC 1000 is clearly bigger than the Eee PC 901, which is hardly surprising for a gadget sporting a larger 10in display. More specs after the jump.
Asus will announce an Intel Atom-powered Eee PC 901 at Computex tomorrow – complete with built-in WiMAX.
The Eee PC 901 will be formally launched tomorrow, along with and the WiMAX Eee PC 901 will be one of the models announced. According to the press release, it “will fulfil the concept of ‘connectivity without boundaries”’ for the new era of Internet connectivity”. The photos are much more interesting, though – after the cut.
We promised MSI that we wouldn't reveal which processor was inside the Wind ultraportable in our hands-on write-up last week, but now the cat’s out of the bag – it’s an Intel Atom processor! D'oh, we knew you knew that anyway.
MSI will launch the Wind desktop and laptop PCs tomorrow at Computex and there will no doubt be lots more info then – be sure to check back at Mobile Computer for the full skinny. In the meantime, we have a few exclusive photos that show more of the MSI Wind’s specifications after the cut.
With Asus now doing the right/sensible/inevitable (depending on your point of view) thing over the Eee PC 900 battery brouhaha in the UK, we’ve discovered some rather interesting information about just how big a deal this is for owners.
An anonymous source at Asus tells us that the number of complaints they’ve received about the Eee PC 900 battery being sold with a 4400mAh battery (rather than a 5800mAh one) is literally no more than a handful. And that’s a bit of an over-estimate – again, according to our source.
Adobe has beta launched Acrobat.com, describing it as a “suite of online services [...] that you can use to create documents together and share them with others.”
That was yesterday. Today, a key component of the new service is out of order. Users attempting to sign up to use Buzzword, Acrobat.com’s, collaborative document system are currently being met with a message telling them that the service is unavailable due to “heavy usage”.
But let’s not be too critical here, as this was a beta launch after all. So what is Acrobat.com? More after the jump.
Fed up of having to type on your Eee PC 701? Well, add a touch-screen, using the illustrated guide over at jkkmobile.
It looks as easy as pie, being apparently achievable in just nine steps. But best of all, there’s no soldering involved: just source the rather dodgy-looking parts and then do a little bending, snapping and clipping. But don’t blame us when your screen breaks and you later find out that the Far East supplier is restocking his shelves using your credit card details for payments.
Asus seems intent on diluting its extraordinarily popular Eee PC brand until barely trace elements of the original remain. The newest reduction is the Eee Box B202, an Eee PC designed for, er, desktop use.
If that’s of interest to you then you’ll be glad to hear that the specifications for the Eee Box B202 have seemingly surfaced today over at HotHardware. Feel free to head right on over to HotHardware for the full low-down but if you fancy sticking with us instead, then the full specs are after the jump.
There’s still not much in the way of new information about the Xperia X1 , but Sony Ericsson has just released a bunch of new photos that make this Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone look more desirable than ever.
The images were posted on the Sony Ericsson Blog and show an X1 in a new colour, ‘Steel Silver’ (like there’s any other colour of steel…). The next Xperia X1 announcement is 17 June and there’s a Sony Ericsson press event in London that evening. Could the two events be related, we wonder..? Lots more pics after the cut.
