If you're thinking of offloading your original iPhone on eBay or to a family member come iPhone 3G launch day on 11th July, you may want to upgrade the software to version 2.0 first.
Appleinsider.com has spotted that the new update now securely deletes all data when you hit 'erase iPhone'. Previously, iPhone only binned the information, leaving it open to being 'unbinned' and accessed by anyone with the right know-how.
Now the software does a popper spring clean by overwriting your contacts, photos and other precious details with random strings of ones and zeros.
It does mean the process takes a tad longer but, short of having a buddy at the Pentagon, it's all but impossible to reverse.
So no worrying about whether the text messages you sent your ex will crop up on the Internet. We'll sleep easier tonight.
The rest of the world may have already reviewed the shiny new Diamond Windows Mobile smartphone, but HTC UK only got around to issuing review models to UK journalists last night.
So, since we have a new video camera to hand, we thought we’d shoot a little clip of – yes – the HTC Diamond box being opened for the very first time! Thrill at the novel pyramidal frustum prismatoid packaging! Gasp as the clear plastic protective strip is peeled away from the smartphone screen! Gaze in awe as the two parts of the cunningly designed mains adapter are clipped together! All that stuff, and more, after the cut.
If all the snippets you’ve read about Opera Mobile 9.5 have had you hankering for this next generation Windows Mobile web browser, here’s a bit of good news – the first beta will be available for download on 15 July.
Opera 9.5 is based on the same browser engine as the recently-released desktop version of Opera 9.5 and, judging by the information we’ve seen so far, should be the best handheld web browser since Safari on the iPhone (though we have high hopes for the imminent Firefox Mobile, too).
Echoing Carphone Warehouse's AOL offer, Phones4U has come up with a similar deal to flog Orange mobile broadband. Customers signing up to Orange's 3GB tariff for £30 a month can snare a 15.4in Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo (pictured) worth £349.99, complete with Intel Celeron 540 Processor, 80GB hard drive and 1GB RAM - together with the free HSDPA modem.
If that seems a bit weedy for your mobile tastes, there's also the option to upgrade to a 120GB Samsung R60 worth £499.99 for a modest £74.95.
Pictures have been leaking onto the web for a few days now of Dell's new Studio line-up. Engadget unearthed snaps of the optional 'Permanent Pictaflex' prints by Mike Ming that will grace the hand rest of the 15in Studio 15 and 17in Studio 17. Now Gizmodo has unveiled the full spec list, including details of the colour schemes...
Just as we thought O2 had finally released its Pay & Go pricing for the iPhone 3G - it went and unreleased it. A page appeared on the O2 website appearing to give full details of the 8GB and 16GB pre-pay deals, but then mysteriously disappeared.
Thankfully it was up long enough for plenty of people to make note of the details. An 8GB model will cost slightly less than predicted at £299.99, while a 16GB version will be £60 more. Intriguingly there'll also be free Wi-Fi and 3G data thrown in for the first six months, reverting to £10 a month after that. Click through for the full text of the offer:
BenQ isn't the biggest mobile player in the UK - but then neither is BT Fusion, BT's Wi-Fi home phone and mobile combo offering. The two have joined together to bring the E72 to these shores, a sharp looking handset with one of the slimmest profiles of any Windows Mobile 6 device.
It measures just 13mm thick and weighs in at a mere 90g. It doesn't have 3G, but it does have the all important Wi-Fi and an instant messaging client compatible with MSN Messenger, Gtalk, Yahoo, ICQ, AOL and Jabber. The camera is a standard 2MP affair and the 2in display is QVGA.
You can get it in any colour as long as it's black, coupled with a "striking" high gloss finish and a splash of red to make it stand out from the crowd.
Lenovo's confirmed it's working on a new series of laptops that will have some interesting features aimed at small business users who don't have the benefit of their own IT department to take care of things.
The SL series will come loaded with built-in online backup and LoJack software that can remotely delete data and even locate stolen laptops and inform the police.
Other features hint at a consumer slant with a 'stylish' new look, video creation software and an HDMI connector.
The range will be formally announced in the next few weeks when hardware details will be given. US prices ranging from a tempting $699 to a less than eye watering $1,199 suggest they won't be quad core.
AppleInsider has it, from a poster on the Mac Rumors forum who says he met an O2 insider who was at a company conference on Monday (got that?), that the iPhone 3G will go on sale here in the UK at 7am on 11th July.
More accurately, it says O2 store doors will open at 7.02am, making a similar play on the network's name as last year's 6.02pm launch. That would differ from the US, where word is that there'll be an 8am start...
Asus has finally made Windows XP drivers for the Eee PC 901 available online. The drivers can be downloaded from the Asus support web site, thought actually getting to the appropriate page seems a little hit an miss at the moment. The FTP server appears to be fine, though – it’s at ftp.asus.com, and can be accessed anonymously.
