Live video-streaming site Qik has moved from its invitation-only alpha stage to launch as a public beta. This means anyone who wants to can now use their mobile phone camera to broadcast video across the internet.
Qik requires the use of special software, which is free and downloaded and installed quickly and easily. However, only certain phones are supported – lots of Nokias and the odd Motorola and Samsung. For the full list of supported handsets, visit Qik’s sign-up page.
But what of Qik on iPhone – Apple’s handset doesn’t support video, does it? Oh yes it does. More after the cut.
It's not the first time we've heard rumours of a 'Newton 2.0' (kudos if Apple ever uses that name again) or a tablet Mac but the whisperings have been ratcheted up a notch by a posting at MacDailyNews.
According to the same person who tipped them about the wireless iTunes store a week before it was announced, a MacBook Touch is on the way, "by October at the latest." Read on for more.
It's three years since SonyEricsson's first Walkman phone, the W800, climbed onto the shelves to be filled with a heady mix of Coldplay, Scissor Sisters and Keane (remember them?). Three years on we've now got TrackID song recognition, SensMe mood-matching playback, Shake control - and this new little trio of phones.
Topping the bill is the W902 (pictured) with a CyberShot-worthy 5MP camera, 2.2-inch QVGA display and built-in stereo speakers. It gets the full complement of Shake, TrackID and SensMe features as well as the same music-playing hardware as the forthcoming, high-end, W980. An N95-matching 8GB Memory Stick Micro M2 card is also in the box to hold a healthy 8,000 songs.
More details have emerged on Dell's Eee challenger, the Dell E, and also its MacBook Air botherer brother, the Dell E Slim.
Unearthed by Engadget this picture shows the new Slim, described by Dell as a pro-sumer Mobile Internet Device. It will have 12.1in screen and come in two versions with either a 1.3 or 1.6GHz Atom processor. The 1.6GHz Slim+ will get Bluetooth and also boost the standard hard drive from 40 to 60GB and the RAM from 512MB or 1GB.
The original Skypephone caused quite a stir when it launched on 3 last year with its free Skype to Skype calls and tiny £50 PAYG price.
Now 3 is back with a successor, the Skypephone S2. The newly printed spec list shows it has a 2.2in QVGA screen, 3.2MP camera, 50MB on-board memory expandable up to 4GB via microSD and will measure just 14mm thick.
The big draw, though, is that it will also get HSDPA and will come with modem drivers to use as a 3 mobile broadband dongle.
It'll be on sale from 18th August for the slightly higher price of £69.99 - or 'under £70' as 3 puts it.
While we can't move for 8.9in Eee clones, we're yet to see one that's designed as a tablet. Gigabyte's M912 is just such a beast and, despite there still being no news on when it will shipping, the good folks over at Expansys have already placed it up for pre-ordering.
The two models on offer both feature 1.6GHz Atom processors, 1280x768 rotating touch screens, 1GB RAM and 160GB hard drives. Prices differ depending on which OS you go for with the XP-toting M192X costing £374.95, while the Vista-loving M192V goes for a slightly higher £399.95.
File this one under 'public safety announcement' for, while it’s not exciting, the information might just save your life. Buckinghamshire County Council’s Trading Standards department has taken it upon itself to warn the whole country about some potentially lethal chargers arriving from China.
Of course, it’s hardly news that electronics imported on the cheap from the Far East might suffer from shoddy construction but Bucks’ consumer police reckon that the build of this latest batch of grey-market chargers is so poor that there is a risk of the internal soldering coming loose, causing wires to disconnect and this could conceivably result in arcing and possible electric shock.
Sounds pretty nasty as it is but the posh district’s Trading Standards folks really crank up the worry factor by singling out chargers designed for Nintendo’s DS and DS handhelds. These products are used by children, for goodness’ sake!
Ever lost a memory stick? Not to worry - the men and women charged with defending our freedoms have lost 131 of them since 2004, not to mention the 658 Ministry of Defence laptops that have also gone walkies.
The figures were uncovered by the Lib Dems in a parliamentary question to the Government, which also revealed that five pieces of the missing MoD kit held information classified as "secret". Whoops!
Take a quick look at the screenshot on the left. How many unread emails are sitting in the inbox? The notification icon might say '6' but the real answer is none: the supposedly-unread messages have either been previously read on another computer, are unimportant or – yikes – are simply spam.
And yet that annoying '6' will sit there and over time perhaps become a '7' or a '8', or a '100'. Indeed, if you’ve just set up your iPhone 3G and synched an existing inbox for the first time, that notification number might well read '500'. And it’ll do so until the messages are deleted from or read with the iPhone. This is because the iPhone software doesn’t have a 'mark as read' feature. It’s official, then: the iPhone is stupid.
How to solve the problem? Well, you can’t But read on for a sort-of workaround.
Although the Microsoft Exchange support that’s part of Apple's new 2.0 firmware makes the iPhone and iPhone 3G less implausible choice for bus...
