HTC Dream becomes T-Mobile G1 - gets $199 price tag (with contract) Print E-mail
By Nick Mansell on Thursday, 18 September 2008

The Wall Street Journal, which has been pretty accurate on its predictions so far, has said that T-Mobile’s rebadge job of the Android-based HTC Dream will be known as the G1 when it's announced on the pink network in the US on Tuesday.

It's also come up with a price: $199 - on contract, which happens to be the exact same price as the 8GB iPhone 3G, although there's no word on quite how long the contract will be.

Intriguingly, the WSJ also states that the phone will "showcase the Google brand... a departure from the standard practice of listing only the manufacturer and wireless carrier on handsets." So expect a liberal plastering of the Google logo on the box.

Toshiba confirms launch of NB100 netbook Print E-mail
By Leon Bailey on Thursday, 18 September 2008

Read more... UPDATE: The full facts are in on the NB100 – details after the cut. But here's what we wrote earlier.

This photo is apparently a picture of the first Toshiba netbook. We say 'apparently' because we received it this morning in an email from a trusted PR source.

However, although the email was headed "Toshiba brings its quality story to netbook market", suggesting an accompanying press release, the message body was empty. All the email contained was this picture as an attachment. So, we’re pretty confident that it’s a picture of the first Toshiba netbook but we can’t be entirely sure.

We have of course emailed our contact right back to ask for more information but as we like to get stuff to you as quickly as possible, and just in case we've been the lucky recipients of an unintended leak, we thought you’d like to pore over the picture in the meantime. Sorry about the low resolution – it’s all we have right now.

UPDATE: Full specifications and price after the cut, so do click.

Google adds Street View and walking directions to mobile Maps Print E-mail
By Leon Bailey on Thursday, 18 September 2008

Read more...Perhaps as part of the build-up to the arrival next week of the first Android-sporting HTC Dream handset, Google has upgraded Google Maps for mobile to include both Street View mode and walking directions.

Users of the desktop version of Maps have, of course, enjoyed both of these features for some time now. However, in this context they have seemed little more than novelties. But in the hand, or more specifically the mobile handset, both Street View and walking direction become properly useful. And let's not forget that earlier demonstration of Street View in action on the Dream. More after the cut.

According to Gardner, the new Pro will have a, "very thin aluminium casing, an LED-backlit display and an aggressive entry-level price point." All of which makes this webpage spotted by Gizmodo all the more interesting. Click through for more.

Lessev is more for mobile charging Print E-mail
By Leon Bailey on Wednesday, 17 September 2008

Read more...It might look like a Tupperware salad bowl but the Lessev Mobile Station is in fact a super-tidy charging point for pocket gadgets and gizmos.

We first spotted it today over at Japan Trend Shop, though a bit of research suggests that it has in fact been around for a couple of months now, having first surfaced at Tokyo’s Interior Lifestyle show in June. So how does it work? Well, a bit more description, and another pic, after the cut.

T-Mobile confirms 23rd September for Android launch Print E-mail
By Nick Mansell on Wednesday, 17 September 2008

Not long to wait now. T-Mobile has finally confirmed what reporters in the States have been writing - that 23rd September will be its launch date for its Android-based Dream.

Engadget reports that the New York Event will include the obligatory presentations from T-Mobile and Google execs followed by some good, honest hands-on demos of the device.

There's still no confirmation of exactly when it'll go on sale. The latest from T-Mobile UK is that we'll be getting our hands on it some time in 'Q4' this year - so that's any time from next month.

UPDATE: CrunchGear reports it'll be available from 20th October in the States and will come in three colours: black, white and, er, brown.

HTC Touch Diamond is all-white Print E-mail
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 16 September 2008

'Diamond' and 'white' are not words normally placed together to form a premium product. Still, HTC reckons a new white coat is just the thing to give its Touch Diamond 'a touch of class to impress even the most style conscious fashionista'. Quite.

The black and white options bring the Diamond into line with its arch rival, Apple's iPhone 3G. Like the iPhone there's no actual hardware difference between the two shades so it's purely down to aesthetics.

There's no indication of pricing but we guess the white will be around the same price as the original SIM free. Just don't go telling any tramps you have £430-worth of 'Diamond White' on you.

'Seven days' to HTC Dream announcement Print E-mail
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 16 September 2008

23rd September is firming up as the likely date for T-Mobile to state when it'll be ready to unleash HTC's Google Android-powered Dream on the US.

The Wall Street Journal has now backed up an earlier prediction made by Reuters, citing "people familiar with the matter". It's also cited the "end of October" as the likely date it'll finally hit the shops Stateside.

According to the WSJ, HTC expects to ship 600,000 to 700,000 of the iPhone 3G rival before the end of the year.

Once again there's no word on pricing - or on a UK release. More when we get it.

UPDATE: YouTube user, scottlet, has posted a video of Google's London Developer Day, showing off a working Android phone. Look out for the subtly covered-up branding.

BlackBerry Storm breaks cover - Thunder rolling in soon Print E-mail
By Nick Mansell on Tuesday, 16 September 2008

Read more...The Storm (aka the Thunder in the UK and 9530 universally) is coming and here's the video to prove it. Sent out to Verizon employees in the US yesterday, it gives a full rundown of the new touchscreen BlackBerry that RIM hopes will give the iPhone 3G a run for its money.

While trumpeting the usual BlackBerry benefits it also boasts about the "rich multimedia experience" the Storm offers, as well as its web browsing capabilities. It also reassures that the touchscreen keyboard offers "smooth and precise text input" - an important factor if RIM is going to wean corporate America from its traditional thumb keyboard. Watch the video after the cut. The video has now been pulled by YouTube.
