Android-powered Acer Aspire netbook on sale at Amazon

By Julian Prokaza on Tue 13 October 2009

The last we heard of Acer’s plans for a Google Android-powered netbook was that it was postponing the launch until Intel had released its new Pine Trail-M chipset and next-generation Atom N450 processor. That information wasn’t confirmed by Acer though, which is hardly surprising as it turns out to be untrue and its Android-powered Aspire D250 is now available for pre-order.

The product page at Amazon.com lists the Aspire AOD250-1613 at $349.99 (around £220), but there’s little new about its specification — it has the usual Intel Atom N280, 10.1in screen, and 160Gb hard drive netbook configuration. Nor is it Amazon doesn’t when the Aspire D250 will be available, though.

There’s still no obvious reason for using Android on a netbook, other than the fact that it’s free. The same obviously applies to any version of Linux, but Acer has missed the chance to save money on an operating system licence by installing Windows XP alongside.

Google is working on its own operating system, of course, and so Android netbooks may just be its way to gauge demand ahead of time.
