Apple lining up iPhone nano chip makers?

By Nick Mansell on Tue 13 January 2009

iPhone nanoThose Apple iPhone nano rumours are starting to gather pace. Despite there not being any mention of a new low-cost baby iPhone at Macworld, there's been no end to the speculation that Apple is about to bring out a mini successor to its 3G handset. Latest to give the rumour-mill a fresh spin is a report in the Chinese-language "Economic Daily News" that Apple is talking to chip makers with a view to placing orders for a new product.

Chinese not being our first language, we turned to the English-language Digitimes for a summary. "Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) will likely land chip orders for Apple's low-cost entry-level iPhone nano," it reports.

"Accordig the the [sic] paper, the chip orders may come in March and the launch of Apple's iPhone nano is expected to take place in June this year at the earliest."

So there you are. Circle the calendar. An iPhone nano announcement by June-ish or I'm a Dutchman – possibly.

Seriously, there does seem to be more and more wind behind this rumour. If orders are placed with component makers in March then Apple will be hard pushed to sit on the news till June – but then Apple are the grand-masters of sitting on product launch news. Watch this space for more.
