Android 'Cupcake' on-screen keyboard caught on video
By Julian Prokaza on Mon 22 December 2008
We’ve already covered some of the features included in ‘Cupcake’ – the forthcoming update for the Android smartphone operating system – but here’s an additional bit of good news for anyone who's less than smitten with the T-Mobile G1 's slide-out keyboard.
Not only does the OS update feature the cryptic “Input method framework, for soft keyboards and other on-screen input methods”, but it also features an on-screen keyboard of its very own. You can see it in action in a low- YouTube video and while the footage is pretty low resolution, it’s clear enough to see that the on-screen keyboard (shown running on the T-Mobile G1) looks and works just like that on the Apple iPhone. Watch after the cut.
There’s no word on whether or not it uses a similar predictive text system as the iPhone to improve (ahem) typing accuracy , but with a release date of “early 2009” for the Android update, we should find out soon enough.
