Toshiba is one of the last laptop manufacturers to launch a netbook, but it has finally caved and the NB100 will be on sale at the end of October in the UK. As far as netbooks go, the NB100 is one of a handful that actually embrace the concept fully, in that it’s small, light and cheap.
We got to spend some time with a pre-production model and made a video of our first impressions – after the cut.
Manufacturers are having a hard time differentiating their netbooks without losing sight of the original netbook concept, and Toshiba is no different. The NB100 has essentially the same specification as every other netbook available and the hope is that the name alone will sway some buyers.
Toshiba hasn’t forgotten that a netbook should be portable above all else though, and the NB100 is just a bit bigger than the Asus Eee PC 901. At 1kg, it’s lighter too, although it does have a smaller battery. Toshiba reckons the 5200mAh cell is good for three and a half hours of use though, which isn’t bad for a netbook of this size.
The glossy 8.9in screens runs at 1024 x 600 and the keyboard, while cramped, has keys that are a little larger than on the similarly-sized Eee PC 901. Not something you’d want to spend long periods typing on, but then that’s true of any laptop this size.
The NB100 will be available in two versions, one with Ubuntu Linux and the other with Windows XP Home. Specifications are essentially the same, but the Linux model makes do with 512Mb of RAM and an 80Gb hard disk, the Windows one ha 1Gb of RAM and a 120Gb drive. Otherwise, it’s standard netbook fare – Intel Atom N270 processor, and so on…
Both models will be available from the end of the month – the Linux NB100 will cost £259 inc VAT; Windows XP Home will cost £299 inc VAT. Look out for a full review shortly, but in the meantime, here’s the video:
I read that the NB100 has a good brightness. Do you think is's enough for outdoor use?

I like the more angular look. The Wind looks toy-ish in comparison.

@Ben having held one of these - it is good enough for a medium day. Not good enough for the beach! IMO the samsung competitor (I forget the product number) is a little better.

Purchased the NB100 Windows XP version and very impressed. Fast, light and very user friendly it comes with trial Office Home 2007 and a multitude of other software. 3 x USB, Monitor out, ethernet, Bluetooth, wireless, all mod cons and the 8.9" screen is very sharp and bright. In essence i had to turn the brightness down indoors from the standard setting. Video playback is good enough for most resolutions but suits widescreen. The Atom 1.60Ghz is fast and suits the 1GB ram without a doubt.

An Amazing Experiment written by Dave Ogden , January 02, 2009
Last week, as an experiment, I loaded a very big, video rich PowerPoint presentation onto a demonstration model of this Toshiba Netbook in my local Staples Store. (It was the NB100 12A with XP Home and 1gb of ram.) This lecture had 95 slides with sound/video content on many of the slides. One slide contained an 80Mb avi and another a 45Mb wmv file. Both ran perfectly. I was stunned when the little Toshiba didn't falter. The store salesman was as amazed as I was. It performed so well that I'm seriously thinking of buying one to use for presenting my astronomy lectures, instead of the bigger 15" HP Pavilion I've been using for the last two years.
The screen is indeed bright and very crisp. I would have liked the webcam to have at least 1.3 million pixels but this one seemed to perform very well on the screen, at 600 x 400. Not sure what quality of image my skype friends would see at the other end of the line though. Another advantage of this machine is the "regression" to XP. My favourite video making software and conversion tools run perfectly in XP but not in Vista. I had a Psion Netbook several years ago. It was great then, but I always wished for something the same size, that would run true Windows and associated software like MS Office. It looks as though the NB100 is the machine to do just that. I will of course work mainly on the bigger laptop for eyesight reasons, but being able to take a fairly powerful, tiny computer everywhere will greatly ease my luggage burden when travelling.
