Hands-on with the Toshiba NB100 netbook Print
By Julian Prokaza on Wednesday, 22 October 2008

Toshiba NB100 netbookToshiba is one of the last laptop manufacturers to launch a netbook, but it has finally caved and the NB100 will be on sale at the end of October in the UK. As far as netbooks go, the NB100 is one of a handful that actually embrace the concept fully, in that it’s small, light and cheap.

We got to spend some time with a pre-production model and made a video of our first impressions – after the cut.

Manufacturers are having a hard time differentiating their netbooks without losing sight of the original netbook concept, and Toshiba is no different. The NB100 has essentially the same specification as every other netbook available and the hope is that the name alone will sway some buyers.

Toshiba hasn’t forgotten that a netbook should be portable above all else though, and the NB100 is just a bit bigger than the Asus Eee PC 901. At 1kg, it’s lighter too, although it does have a smaller battery. Toshiba reckons the 5200mAh cell is good for three and a half hours of use though, which isn’t bad for a netbook of this size.

Toshiba NB100 vs Eee PC 901

The glossy 8.9in screens runs at 1024 x 600 and the keyboard, while cramped, has keys that are a little larger than on the similarly-sized Eee PC 901. Not something you’d want to spend long periods typing on, but then that’s true of any laptop this size.

The NB100 will be available in two versions, one with Ubuntu Linux and the other with Windows XP Home. Specifications are essentially the same, but the Linux model makes do with 512Mb of RAM and an 80Gb hard disk, the Windows one ha 1Gb of RAM and a 120Gb drive. Otherwise, it’s standard netbook fare – Intel Atom N270 processor, and so on…

Both models will be available from the end of the month – the Linux NB100 will cost £259 inc VAT; Windows XP Home will cost £299 inc VAT. Look out for a full review shortly, but in the meantime, here’s the video:

I read that the NB100 has a good brightness. Do you think is's enough for outdoor use?

I like the more angular look. The Wind looks toy-ish in comparison.

@Ben having held one of these - it is good enough for a medium day. Not good enough for the beach! IMO the samsung competitor (I forget the product number) is a little better.

Purchased the NB100 Windows XP version and very impressed. Fast, light and very user friendly it comes with trial Office Home 2007 and a multitude of other software. 3 x USB, Monitor out, ethernet, Bluetooth, wireless, all mod cons and the 8.9" screen is very sharp and bright. In essence i had to turn the brightness down indoors from the standard setting. Video playback is good enough for most resolutions but suits widescreen. The Atom 1.60Ghz is fast and suits the 1GB ram without a doubt.

An Amazing Experiment
written by Dave Ogden , January 02, 2009

Last week, as an experiment, I loaded a very big, video rich PowerPoint presentation onto a demonstration model of this Toshiba Netbook in my local Staples Store. (It was the NB100 12A with XP Home and 1gb of ram.)
This lecture had 95 slides with sound/video content on many of the slides. One slide contained an 80Mb avi and another a 45Mb wmv file. Both ran perfectly. I was stunned when the little Toshiba didn't falter. The store salesman was as amazed as I was. It performed so well that I'm seriously thinking of buying one to use for presenting my astronomy lectures, instead of the bigger 15" HP Pavilion I've been using for the last two years.

The screen is indeed bright and very crisp. I would have liked the webcam to have at least 1.3 million pixels but this one seemed to perform very well on the screen, at 600 x 400. Not sure what quality of image my skype friends would see at the other end of the line though.
Another advantage of this machine is the "regression" to XP. My favourite video making software and conversion tools run perfectly in XP but not in Vista.
I had a Psion Netbook several years ago. It was great then, but I always wished for something the same size, that would run true Windows and associated software like MS Office. It looks as though the NB100 is the machine to do just that.
I will of course work mainly on the bigger laptop for eyesight reasons, but being able to take a fairly powerful, tiny computer everywhere will greatly ease my luggage burden when travelling.

NB100 and iTunes
written by R Hedges , January 16, 2009

I'm intruiged by Dave Ogden's comments as I bought an NB100 12A from Stables which I'm generally pleased with. It is not possible to play iTunes downloaded films or TV progs in full screen -- the picture jolts and freezes. Having done as many tweaks as I can to improve performance I can now watch them but only if I reduce the size of the viewing window to about half the screen. Any more and there is a 'ripple' that appears across the screen about 75% up it when the picture gets busy.

Also, I can't get into the BIOS set up which you are supposed to be able to do by pressing escape when starting and then F1 after the beep.

I'd appreciate any guidance on these issues.

I still love the little thing and overall am pleased with my purchase at 266 GBP

Toshiba NB100
written by Gemma Merrick , January 16, 2009

I am very pleased with Dave Ogden's comments as well as i am 16 and i am saving up to buy one of these little machines for school, as i am preparing for my actual GCSE's. With the Toshiba NB100's memory on windows XP, i am geussing i will have enough space to fill in my essays and pictures, and also it only weighing so little, i wont have to carry it around in one of those laptop bags where it will proberly get stolen knowing my luck, and i could just fit it in my school bag. All your comments to me on this situation really helped make my decision on buying one of these, and thank you very much.

so good so far
written by 1011 , March 02, 2009

I haven;t got any problem with videos, music etc...
but I had to disable/delete lots of pre installed software (though its much better than the fully polluted HPs)

also I've disabled some senseless windows services...so it runs great...over my expectations

I'm watching divx, xvid, wmv movies (on a train, etc) and no lag at all

dont even try HD format :D

More thoughts about the NB100
written by Dave Ogden , March 09, 2009

I did buy one and it has become my favourite computer because of the incredible convenience. The keyboard takes a little getting used to, as it's easy to mistype and there are other, bigger netbooks with bigger keys for those with chubby fingers. However, this is fine for me and typing accuracy quickly improves with familiarity. The screen is pretty bright and at night I often reduce brightness to half, to avoid glare. Battery life has not been less than 3.5 hours and often more than 4 depending on how I have used it.

As for the video comments above, I have now, successfully used My NB100 to present a multimedia lecture as mentioned previously.

When playing BBC iPlayer TV programmes, I did experience a few video glitches in full screen mode at first. Quite often, the video would break up, or freeze while the sound continued. With a little research I discovered that the open source free, media decoder, "ffdshow", was available for download. After I installed it, iPlayer has been excellent at full screen for most programmes I have watched. It does still glitch occasionally, but far less than before. I'm inclined to think this is an aspect of the streaming and buffering process, when downloading via wifi (2meg broadband connection) and may not be caused by the graphics adapter, since large videos will run perfectly well from the hard disc or a pendrive. (Also, iPlayer is an evolving medium and as the website explains, they are still experimenting.)

One minor gripe - about the keyboard again - the colour of the lettering is grey, on black keys. As daylight begins to fade, the letters become difficult to read in low light. I think white letters would be an improvement. I must learn to touchtype!

Having owned and used the NB100 hard, for a month or two, I am still very happy to recommend this little gem of a computer to anyone considering buying a netbook.

By the way, there are two versions of the XP Home Toshiba NB100 Netbook. The NB100 12A which I bought, has a silver lid and trim. The other version which, according to Toshiba, has identical technical specification, has a gold lid and trim. For some reason, in January, Toshiba offered £30 cashback on the gold one, but NOT on the silver one. The offer is on again in March. Choose your colour and supplier carefully if you want the cashback. One major supplier was selling the 12A silver one but advertising it with the Toshiba cashback which was NOT available for that model. So, please do check the deal with Toshiba's website to be sure I'm not talking ...tosh!!

I hope other contributors and readers find these additional comments useful.

I have just purchased an NB100. I ran through the initial setup and got disturbed by visitors immediately after setting up my user password. For the life of me I cant remember what it is. Any ideas how I can reset or is there a shop you can recommend I can take it to for a password reset. I have the receipt so I can prove it is mine

Just bought an nb100, mostly for mobile media. I was pretty shocked at how poorly iTunes movies worked (as in not at all) took it back for a refund after many hours trying to solve the problem. I read elsewhere this may be a hardware issue therefore not solvable

I'm writing you on my little NB100 I've been using for some time now. It is bought as a side computer (and has more HD space than the main one :-)). Very pleased with it.

I must agree about those problems you mentioned-video twiches. Alot. It is obviously some hardware problems. If you find any software solution-please-post us a link. I use k-lite codec pack and BS player (it works perfectly elsewere). Plan is-to use this little machine along with external music card and synthesizer. Hope it wouldnt make any problems with the sound-I would be sad if I had to get rid of it.
Any other job-Toshiba woks better than my main machine (2.3 gHz, 2 GB ram).
Great idea with changing letter colour on a keypad-it would improve night writing alot.
once again-plesae post us a video solution if you found one. Thanks
