Hands-on with the Apple MacBook

Review by Julian Prokaza on Wed 15 October 2008

Apple MacBook hands-on Apple didn’t hold a UK launch event to coincide with the one in the US yesterday, but it has now shipped out the new MacBook and MacBook Pro models for review.

We’ll post full reviews of both models in the next few days, but in the meantime, here’s a hands-on video with the MacBook.

As noted by just about everyone everywhere by now, the new MacBook has what Apple is referring to as a “unibody” design. This essentially means that the case is milled from a single block of aluminium and assembled from just a few parts. The result is a laptop that feels extremely solid and looks very stylish – much like the MacBook Air, in fact.

The other notable new feature is the Multi-Touch touchpad. Large and made from toughened glass, this supports a whole new set of finger gestures and, perhaps more significant, lacks any mouse buttons. Instead, the entire pad is a button and pressing it results in a tactile click. This takes some getting used to and it requires mental effort to avoid subconsciously reaching for a non-existent mouse button with a thumb. It works well, though we suspect it’ll be a love-it-or-hate-it deal.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s our Apple MacBook hands-on video.
