HTC has confirmed the existence of the Touch HD, just days after images of the impressive-looking new smartphone were leaked online. As predicted, the Touch HD has a 3.8in, 480 x 800 (WVGA) screen and HSDPA, in a package that’s around the same size as the iPhone.

HTC has also announced two other QVGA Windows Mobile Touch smartphones – the Touch 3G and Touch Viva (previously known as the 'Opal ') – and both are essentially incremental upgrades to the existing Touch handset. As you might not expect, the Touch 3G has HSDPA support, while the Viva makes do with EDGE a much slower processor, and a range of colours.

The display on the HTC Touch HD is the highest resolution available on a device this size, though we are a bit concerned about how well the TouchFLO 3D interface will run with those extra pixels – the Touch HD has the same 528MHz Qualcomm processor as the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro, neither of which ran the custom HTC user interface particularly speedily.

The Touch HD has 512Mb of flash memory and 288Mb of RAM, and will ship with an 8Gb microSDHC card. It also has a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, and a second front-mounted VGA camera.

There’s no word on the price or carrier availability yet, but the HTC Touch HD will be available in Europe in Q4 this year.
