Intel Centrino 2 launches. Did anyone notice?
By Leon Bailey on Tue 15 July 2008
Intel has at last got around to launching its overdue Centrino 2 mobile platform, with a line-up of five Core 2 Duo chips. At the same time, the chip firm has announced that it will introduce a further eight ‘ultra-low voltage’ processors within the next 90 days, along with its first quad-core chips designed specifically for laptops.
And frankly, that’s about as exciting as this particular bit of processor news gets. Not very exciting, is it? But if you fancy a few more brain-aching stats about Intel’s latest wireless mobile wheeze, feel free to click the Read more link below.
According to the chip manufacturer, Centrino 2 matters because notebook PCs "are very popular". The platform offers "increased performance, improved energy-efficiency for longer battery life, speedier and longer-range wireless connections (Wi-Fi and later WiMAX), thinner and lighter styles and new business-class features", says Intel. So now you know.
The new Core 2 Duo chips form a key part of Centrino 2. The top-end processor is the Core 2 Extreme X9100, which clocks at 3.06GHz, has a 1066MHz FSB and sucks up 44w. At the low end, the Core 2 Duo P8400 vibrates along at 2.26GHz with the same FSB but a lower power draw of 25w.
