Our friends over at the PC World Test Center have determined that the iPhone 3G’s battery life is just 5 hours 38 minutes – but still better than that of the competition.

During tests connecting the iPhone 3G to AT&T’s HSDPA/UMTS network, PC World’s tech guys determined that users of Apple’s 1m-selling handset could natter away for that amount of time before the power cells would flake out.

That compares badly with the original iPhone’s ability to manage 10 hours during similar tests on EDGE carried out by PC World last year. But the surprise news is that, even at a semi over 5 hours, the iPhone 3G’s battery performance is better than the competition. Yep, we said better. Read on after the cut to find out how much better.

Not very much better, is the answer. HTC’s Touch Dual, for example, managed 5 hours and 18 minutes’ talktime. Mind you, pity those poor folks with a Palm Treo 750 – they see just 3 hours and 53 minutes’ worth of talktime, according to PC World’s tests.

Certainly these results tally with our brief experience with the iPhone 3G: per charge, we’ve barely managed more than 5 hours’ active use out of our review model. And more on that soon.

Ap ple promised me the REAL INTERNET in Safari on the iPhone. Websites are taking that away from us with these stupid sites that detect the iPhone and redirect away from what I'm trying to do online. It is EXCEEDINGLY AGGRAVATING. There needs to be some way to keep them from doing that. If I want to go to Jirbo.com's regular site on my iPhone in Safari, I should have that choice. The site should surface a dialog asking "iP hone or Regular Web?" But no, no go. Go to that site yourself in iPhone and try, I dare you, try to click the Contact link to get to the contact form. It redirects. And there's no equivalent given for the iPhone. PLEA SE, Apple, hear us, do something right away about this before it gets out of control!
