Toshiba's Portégé R500 grows solid state drive
By Nick Mansell on Monday, 14 April 2008

Toshiba Portégé R500The current vogue for solid state hard drives hasn't gone unnoticed by Toshiba. It's just slapped a 128GB SSD into a new version of its ultra-portable Portégé R500, the R500-12Q.

Besides the solid state boost, it gets a 1.33GHz ultra-low voltage Intel Core 2 Duo U7700 processor and 2GB of memory.

As with the rest of the range, the screen is a 12.1in, 1280x800 LED backlit display. Windows Vista Business comes as standard.

If traditional hard drives and Windows XP are more to your liking then there's also the R500-11Z and R500-121, which use standard 160GB drives and come with Windows XP on DVD for use as "recovery media" - Toshiba's helpful way of giving you the option of installing it in place of the pre-loaded Vista Business. Sadly, they haven't been announced for Europe.

We're awaiting word on when the 12Q will be arriving here. Expect to pay a hefty premium for that solid state drive when it does.
