Apple taking iPhone on a YouTube Safari?
By Nick Mansell on Mon 31 March 2008
The latest iPhone firmware build, 2.0, has just been sent to developers with one or two interesting additions in the pipeworks - including wireless syncing with .Mac accounts. Most intriguing of all is a new YouTube plug-in for iPhone's Safari web browser, sparking rumours that Flash support, or at least in-browser YouTube footage, is on the way.
Apple's always been a bit sniffy about adding Flash to the iPhone, despite it being the format of choice for YouTube, iPlayer and thousands of other websites. It went so far as to provide a whole separate YouTube app just so users could watch YouTube content in a non-Flash format. The BBC also had to look for a work-around to bring iPlayer to the Apple handset.
Now Apple's put the cat among the pigeons with this new mystery plug-in. Could it be a sign that Flash support is finally coming to the iPhone? Or could it be some elaborate add-on to allow YouTube videos to play out and be browsed in Safari rather than having to open the YouTube app?
Answers on a postcard, please, to arrive anytime before the official release of firmware 2.0 this summer.
