£99 Elonex ONE laptop is no powerhouse... Print E-mail
By Julian Prokaza on Friday, 22 February 2008

Elonex ONEWith just a week to go before the launch of Elonex’s £99 ONE laptop, The Register claims to have had a peek at its specifications. The ONE is aimed at the same education market as other ultra-low cost laptops, but judging from the single photo that’s been released so far, it’s a good deal chunkier than the Asus Eee PC. According The Inquirer, the specification is a good deal lower too – but then this laptop is half the price of Asus’ offering.

The ONE runs a version of Debian Linux with a suite of custom applciations, and has a 7in 800 x 480 screen (same as the Eee PC), 128Mb RAM and 1Gb of flash storage. It has both Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections, along with stereo speakers and a microphone.

The Inquirer can only speculate on the “LNX Code 8 Mobile Processor”  running at 300MHz though, since Elonex is keeping mum on the precise details. It is considerably slower than the 900Mhz Mobile Celeron chip in side the Eee PC though, and is no doubt part of the reason for the ONE’s low price tag.

The Elonex ONE will be launched at The Education Show at the Birmingham NEC, which runs from 28th February to 1st March. Elonex will launch the ONE laptop in Hall 11 at Stand SW-T51.
