After sticking with Symbian ever since it launched the R380 back in 2000, Sony Ericsson has finally succumbed to the dark side juggernaut and announced a new Windows Mobile-powered smartphone – the Xperia X1.
Produced in conjunction with HTC, the X1 has a similar sliding keyboard design to the TyTN II, but has a pleasingly curvy shape and a 3in, 800 x 480 screen. It’s quad-band with HSUPA (an improvement on HSDPA) and has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth A2DP and aGPS. It measures 110 x 17 x 53mm and weighs 145g.

The X1 has a custom program launcher to make Windows Mobile a mite friendlier, but as with HTC’s TouchFLO interface, this still dumps you back to Windows Mobile when you want to do anything productive.
The handset is expected to be available in the spring (no word on the price yet), but it doesn’t necessarily spell doom for Sony Ericsson’s relationship with Symbian. According to a spokesperson, the X1 is only the first handset to appear under the Xperia brand and future models may or may not use Windows Mobile.
