Nokia announces 16Gb N96 smartphone
By Julian Prokaza on Monday, 11 February 2008

Nokia N96Mobile World Congress kicks off today, so expect a rash of new smartphone announcements throughout the week. First off the blocks is Nokia with four new handsets, including an update to the N95 – the N96.

The Nokia N96 has a slick new design and now comes with 16Gb of storage and a microSDHC slot (for up to 8Gb of additional storage). The 2.8in screen can play MPEG-4, Windows Media Video and Flash Video, plus the internal DVB-H tuner lets you watch live TV, complete with a program guide. The 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens can also capture video at 30 frames-per-second. The Nokia N96 is expected to cost around €500, contract-free.

More info and images on the rest of Nokia’s new handsets after the cut.

The new Nokia 6210 Navigator and 6220 Classic handsets both have A-GPS and HSDPA, allowing images to be ‘geotagged’ and uploaded to photo sharing sites like Flickr. The 6210 Navigator has a 3.2-megapixel camera and integrated compass with an accelerometer that helps navigation on foot – the map automatically rotates to match the phone’s orientation.

The 6220 Classic has a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and like the 6210, has an MP3 player and FM tuner. The 6210 Navigator is expected to cost around €300, the 6220 Classic around €325.

Finally, the Nokia N78 is designed to take advantage of the new suite of Nokia services, including the Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps, and Share on Ovi - a new online service that enables consumers to share their personal media. It has A-GPS, Wi-Fi and HSPDA connectivity, plus an FM transmitter that allows you to listen to music on any FM radio. It’s expect to cost around €350 contract-free.
