There's an interesting story over at The Register about the non-event that was the launch of the UK iPhone. A queue did form outside the Apple Store on Regent Street, but it was pretty much business as usual at other iPhone outlets (Carphone Warehouse and O₂) around the country – just a handful of customers, in other words. 

The story is spun off a blog post over at the Dialaphone blog, which details the pre-launch hysteria at stores in and around London. There were, apparently, 15 people queuing outside the Apple Store at around 3pm on Friday, though this did swell to a few hundred come 6.02pm.

So, a typically British reaction to the iPhone, yet another example of media fibbery in an attempt to concoct a story or just more anti-Apple cynicism from certain quarters? We suspect the muted response is the result of the iPhone costing £269 with contract in a country that's used to getting a phones for free when the contract costs £25/month.
