Where can I buy ebooks for the Sony Reader?

I'm thinking of importing the new Sony Reader device, but their Connect store doesn't sell ebooks to the UK. Do you know of any other suppliers of ebooks that would be compatible?
Dave Saunders, via email
Sony has no plans to release the Reader in the UK and, as you have discovered, the Connect store only allows US residents to download ebooks. WHSmith sells ebooks in a number of formats (Adobe, Microsoft and Mobipocket) and you may well find that these work, but it isn't guaranteed.
Some users attempting to go down this route have hit a brick wall when it comes to DRM, so we'd suggest having a nose around the Mobile Read forums to see what other non-US users are doing before you buy.

I have owned a Sony PRS-500 (imported from US) since January and am disappointed by the battery life. The claimed "7500 page-turns" just isn't true in the case of my machine. The user interface is crummy, too, and while the screen is great I feel the whole thing is overpriced. Really, who needs to carry thousands of books around with them? 10 or 20, perhaps, with the rest sitting on your computer's hard drive, would be plenty for most of us.Maybe the new model is better. Anyhow, think carefully before stumping up all that dosh!Advice on getting ebooks is here:http://www.mobileread.com/
Hi try any website with Adrobe PDF. Sony have done an update patch which is compatible with my model. Some of the ones' I have had joy with are books on board, which is brilliant and fair-priced. Hope this helps you.
HUGE selection of secure Adobe pdf and epub available for the Sony PRS 505 Reader. Excellent customer support from a team that actually answers emails and of course the lowest prices. Hi there, I got the Sony reader also, came with 100 classics that I don't feel like reading,If you installed the software it would have showed you a link to a shop that you can buy them,,mine showed me a very good websitehttp://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/navigate.do?ctx=10030
sorry my error thereWaterStoneshttp://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/navigate.do?ctx=10030
Why waste money on this Sony paperweight, when you can get alternative eInk readers (iRex, Bookeen, Hanlin) that read more formats (including the Mobi DRM and non-DRM), have better support, and offer more flexibility for the future? And much better battery life!
Try mybebook.com
You can buy the device with an intnl credit card. Nowhere on the sony site does it warn consumers on NOT being able to buy the BOOKS on an intnl credit card from the sony book store (separate site). So the bookstore site customer service response has been, after three weeks and many dollars and time later the following, after my "incident number" was escalated to the higher reaches of Sony support.WE CANT HELP - SORRY!I have used the same credit card in both instances and have even a USA billing address associated with my card that works when buying the device but is not acepted at the book store. (same card is accepted all over the states online at other stores)Their biggest excuse given was that the Sony device store (online) is a different company altogether and that I should take up the issue with them. The Sony DEVICE service support said sorry, all we can do is apologise and escalate this to the next level and confirmed that there was nothing they could do.Fact is, it is misrepresentation to publicly advertise these devices without issuing a warning on the site that the books themselves CANNOT be purchased on a foreign credit or debit card.Furthermore, it would appear that the support service staff are not only badly trained, but have no authorisation to do anything at all. 3 weeks of this absurdity and the hierarchal structure is simply to waste consumers phone bills and time escalating the process to heaven knows where, at which point the final result is a new number to call and a start again at the bottom of the escalation chain.SO ALL READER LOVERS -BEWARE - DONT GET CONNED IN TO BUYING THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE A UK OR US CREDIT CARD THAT HAS A VALID PRIMARY BILLING ADDRESS IN THAT RESPECTIVE COUNTRY.As for Sony support - Burger King's soggy fries complaint department is more pro-active than them.
You can get them here for free, they have alot of free ebooks also

Hi, we've recently launched an ebook website called ebookShoppe.com. We have over 50,000 ebooks listed at the moment which are available in PDf, ePub, mobi, msreader and MP3 formats. Unlike the URL above you will have to pay for them, as they are official ebooks from the publishers. Hope this helps.
Let us know what you think, all feedback is appreciated
