My 256Mb memory card is full with just 122Mb of data
By Mark Wilson on Wednesday, 05 September 2007

My Windows Mobile device has a 256Mb memory card, of which I've used 122Mb. However, the card is listed as being full. Have you any idea what has happened to the other half of my memory? (I've tried reading another, 128Mb card and that one was correctly detected.)

Geoff Lindsey, via email

There are two likely causes for this problem, the first of which is that there is a Recycle folder hidden somewhere on the card. To reveal it, use your PC to read the card, making sure hidden and system files are set to be visible in the Folder Options Control Panel. Using Explorer or My Computer, you should then be able to navigate the card and delete the offending folder.

Alternatively, the problem could be that the card has been corrupted - this can also be fixed using your PC. With the card connected, open up My Computer, right-click on the card and select Properties. Move to the Tools tab and click the button to check the drive for errors, accepting the option to fix any which are found. Another way to check for errors is to click Run from the Start menu and use the command chkdsk [driveletter]: /f.
