How can I change my smartphone icon in Windows Mobile Device Center?
By Mark Wilson on Sunday, 19 August 2007

I own a Samsung i730 that I synchronise with my Vista PC using Windows Mobile Device Center. I wanted to know whether it was possible to change the image that’s displayed to the left of the Mobile Device window, so I don’t have to look at a cartoon representation of my device.

Andrew Morton, via email

ImageThis can be done, but it’s far from simple. First off, you need to find an icon you want to use — try www.tinyurl.com/245ch4 for a selection of free ones. Rename the icon to ‘sync.ico’ and then connect your handheld to the PC.

The icon file then needs to be copied to the Windows folder of your handheld, but unfortunately this is not accessible by browsing from your desktop computer, so you will need to copy the file to another location first, such as a storage card. You can then use File Explorer to copy and paste the icon file to its Windows folder.

Back on the desktop PC, open Device Manager and expand the entry labelled Portable Devices. Right-click the entry labelled ‘Windows Mobile Device’ or ‘Smartphone’ and select the Uninstall option. When complete, disconnect your phone from the computer and wait for a couple of minutes before reconnecting it.

The device will be automatically detected and the necessary drivers installed, and when you open Windows Mobile Device Center, the new logo will be show in all its glory. Hopefully.
