On the advice of a friend, I installed TCPMP on my smartphone to enable me to playback a wider variety of media formats. I’m generally impressed with the program, but I have found that my MP3 ringtones stopped working properly. I uninstalled TCPMP and my ringtones started to work again. Surely it must be possible to have the program installed without messing things up in this way?

The Core Pocket Media Player is a popular — and highly capable — media player, but many users have reported problems similar to yours. Fortunately, there is a workaround — launch TCPMP and click Options > Settings. Click Select Page > File Associations and untick the box labelled MPEG Audio Files. This reinstates Media Player as the default player for MP3 files (but nothing else), and means that your custom ringtones will work normally.
